Default Help with troubleshooting starter problem 99ranger

Hi,

I have a 99 XLT 3.0 V6 Automatic. When I trun the ignition on, it just clicks and does not crank. I cheked the battery - ok, did try to Jump from my mini-van and also via a portable jumper - just clicks every time.

Can any one tell how to locate the starter, solenoid etc. Can;t find any diagram, for this either. What is the best logical sequence of troubleshooting this.

Any help would be great.

Thanks,

The starter is normally on the bottom to side of motor that has a gear with teeth that turns the flywheel. The starter soleniod is attached to the starter motor. If you purchase a new starter you will get both parts. Its best to get under the truck to see it. A starter is round in shape and about 7 inches to a foot long or longer.

Did you get a chance to get under the truck and take a look yet?

Hi,

I wanted to get back with my feedback. Yes, I was able to get to the starter with your help/suggestion. It was helpful.

Thanks,
Ashok

How did this turn out? I had same problem with 1989 Ranger after replacing battery . It cranked OK one time and the next try ,it just clicked one hard click, not really turning the engine over. Stater was rebuilt just two years ago.
