Possible causes for burning too much oil?
hey guys, i have a 2002 3.0 xlt flex fuel. i replaced the PCV valve last weekend and i switched to high mileage oil. it was running like a brand new truck for the first couple days, but now it just feels like its not performing at its peak again. there's the very faint clicking sound when i accelerate and i seem to be burning through oil somewhat too fast. any insight will be much appreciated.
thanks, chase

Re: Possible causes for burning too much oil?
worn piston rings can be a cause. There may be a gasket leaking or cracked part.
Is there oil in the cooling system?

ok. no there's no oil in the cooling system. i'm slowly but surely learning the ins and outs of engines. are the piston rings an easy fix? i'm hoping its not a gasket or a cracked part. how would you say the best way to go about finding out if it's either of those things would be?
----------
also i thought i might mention that i'm not getting any smoke coming from the exhaust and i have never seen any oil spots under my truck.

Re: Possible causes for burning too much oil?
The "clicking" might be a lifter tick and no, piston rings are not an easy fix that would require a rebuild of the motor in most cases. Do a compression test on all cylinders. A compression tester would be something like this http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CI8BEPMCMAA , cheap and easy to use just pull out a spark plug and put the fitting in and normal and abnormal ranges are on the gauge

Re: Possible causes for burning too much oil?
Easy way to check the rings on the piston is to do a compression test.
Rings on the pistons can be a easy job depends your skill level.

I have a compression tester. So if any of the cylinders have an abnormal compression that means that ring may be bad? I've done a compression test on my old supra but it's been a while and I'm not too experienced yet. Thanks for the help.

Exactly
Over time the rings get brittle and break.

Re: Possible causes for burning too much oil?
ok guys.. i've been super busy lately and haven't had time to do anything with my truck. i'm gonna try something to try and take care of the pinging i've been hearing.
planning on replacing my fuel filter and running some injector cleaner through my lines. also i'm going to clean the MAF/IAT sensor and throttle body. then run some sea foam and see if all that helps. it's a cheap fix if that does it.
cross your fingers for me gents!
chase
p.s. i'll get some pics of my truck up once i get it washed and my engine bay all cleaned up. it's nothing special but you'll get an idea of what i'm running with.

Re: Possible causes for burning too much oil?
are you overfull on the oil? that could cause excess crank case pressure and force oil up past the oil ring
