Default Misfire cylinder 5

I took my truck into the Ford dealership to get an oil change, they were running a special- they did it for $17 (cheaper than I could have purchased the materials) anyway while the truck was having the oil changed I guess the mechanic noticed a noise and ran a check. It showed up as a misfire in cylinder 5. They called and wanted me to promptly give them $275.0 so they could tear the whole thing apart. They said it could be some spring (????) or a shot engine. . .

I hadn't even noticed the misfire. When I got the truck back yesterday I started tinkering. The misfire occurs right as the truck is starting up and that's all. A little bit of shaking a few pops and the truck is ready to go. I've recently done a lot of work on the truck including: replacing the head gaskets, ignition coil, wires that run from the spark plugs, new fuel filter, and water pump.

Oh, 1999 Ranger V6 3.0.

I'm at a loss about what could be causing this misfire. I have been reading and some people say check the spark plugs, but I am rather inexperienced at all this and I'm not sure what I should be checking the spark plugs for? Any other ideas?

since you changed the ignition coil and stuff, do the timing. or have it done.

How would it be the timing belt? Is there some way to check the ignition coil and the spark plugs to make sure they are working. I was in a crunch and had the coil changed at a small random shop, I also had a spark plug that broke off and I couldn't get it out and I had a shop fix that.
I would like to check both of those things to make sure they are fixed correctly, anybody know how.

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 3.0L also and am experiencing the same problem. Just put new plugs and wires in myself and still am having problems. No pops or odd sounds in the interior of the motor.

hmm, when i read your thread title i coulda swore you had the 2.5L 4 banger.... good thing you cleared that up.... lol on a serious note, yes retiming the motor could fiix it. My old car had a cylinder misfire, and i put new plugs and wires on it (you said you replaced the coil and wires so your good there) and had it retimed, and it ran like a champ again! Get er' done!

get a meter and check for continuity for your fuel injectors, mine have misfire on first cylinder it turns out its the fuel injector crap out on me, for the spark plugs,if you havent change yours for a long time, do a seafoam first and then replace your sparkplugs and wires and make sure you check the gap on the sparkplug, the ones on autozone are pre gapped already,it wont hurt to double check the gap on those, and also misfires could also happen if you mixed up the firing order, just a thought! good luck!
