Default 2002 Ranger 3.0

Hey guys just signed up and am glad to be here. I just bought a 2002 Ranger Edge with the understanding the motor is shot, 3.0. Looking for the best and most cost efficient way to bring it back to life. Please guide me on what is compatible as a swap and what to look for that might represent real value.

Not sure if this was bought at the money but the body is dent free and mostly scratch free. Seats heavily stained and will need tires. Automatic Tranny . Will really clean up pretty nice. $400 with a clear title.

My hobby interest is in musclecars, Chevelles, but I run a ranch for a living so Ford trucks do the work around here. Thanx in advance.

John

Im no expert but alot of people drop 4bt cummins in their rangers if they are using it for work like that. OR you can just drop another 3.0 or 4.0 in it. You also can look for a Explorer or Stang and take the 5.0 out of it and drop it in?

Thanx for the quick reply. This will just be a knock around truck to keep miles off my 150/350 4x4's. Prefer a 3.0 for ease of transfer. Will only certain years work or is there a lot of options. Have access to a 4.0 for $300 but it came out of a car. Or will most 3.0's work once you transfer the correct parts.

3.0 4.0 5.0 are all easy swaps just engine transmission. ( and if i remember with the 5.0 you have to add some new/diff motor mounts). Im not sure bout the 4.0 out of a car hopefully someone with better knowledge will chime in. If i were u i wud go to a local jy and search for explorers(basically a ranger) rangers mustangs. You can probably get the engines for cheap.

Any 3.0 from 1998 and above should be a direct swap. the 2003-2004 3.0 had the most power and 2000-2001 had the most TQ. They stopped making them in 2007.
Pre 1998 3.0's might need a few things swapped over before they will hook up to everything. Pre 1995 you'll defiantly need to change a few things over.

Thanx DHEM as this starts narrowing it down. So can I understand that most any 3.0 from whatever source, 1998 up, will swap as long as I bolt up my trucks specific parts.

well I was talking about the ranger 3.0. A Taurus 3.0 is different, like only the block, heads, crank, rods, pistons and timing chain might be the only thing thats the same between a car 3.0 vulcan and a Ranger 3.0 vulcan. 1 was built for a rwd truck, the other for a fwd car.

Basicly I'd look for a Ford 500 RWD car and go from there. It has the exact same 3.0 as your truck does and it will be a direct bolt in. I went through this with Geico (a mistake trusting their engine supplier) 3 times. I'm on my 4th engine now. This engine I'm using now came out of a 2002 Ford 500 RWD car with an auto tranny. They had to reuse my ECU and my bellhousing, but other than that it bolted right into my 2004 Ranger Edge. I haven't had any problems out of it either.

Have found a 2004 Taurus, 120,000 miles that is ride and drive. No title. New battery and alternator. $600. Other than the labor required to make it work is this a viable swap. Should part out and scrap for at least 1/2 of the money.

Well if you use a Taurus motor you'll need to swap alot off of it, like exhaust manifolds, air intake, the pulleys, possibly the camshaft (which I guess you could leave as optional), possibly the oil pan, and some more odds and ends. I recommend looking for a truck 3.0.
Also, if you do go for a car 3.0, make sure its the vulcan v6, because Ford has 2 3.0's, a DOHC Duratec, and a Vulcan OHV. You cant swap in a duratec unless you do alot of serious mods.

Thanx guys for all the help. I am picking up a correct year ranger replacement motor this evening. Was able to hear it running in a rollover. 85K miles and will have every piece attached as it comes out. $550. Anxious to start tinkering with it. Sure will be cheaper than building a SS Chevelle no matter what I put in it.

I replaced my 3.0 with a used engine from a Ranger last year. Was a fairly simple swap that my son and I did on one Saturday. Hope your project goes well.

Old thread, but you forgot the 3rd 3.0 that came in a Taurus: the 3.0L DOHC Yamaha-built SHO
