Thumbs down oil gauge and a clicking noise

I have a 6 cyl-3.0L engine, with about 175,800 miles on it. Recently while going downhill on an interstate, I started hearing a rapid clicking noise, and my oil pressure gauge dropped off to zero, and the check gage light came on. I pulled off to the side, and restarted the engine and everything went back to normal, until another 5 miles and it happened again.

I replace the oil and filter every 3,000 miles using a Fram Tough Guard filter and 5w-30 Castrol high mileage oil. I've never had a problem like this before, so what could it be?

Dont use Fram they really suck. The oil gauge isnt a real gauge, just a dummy gauge. You should figure out what code is coming up.

Hmmm clicking sound. Definitely check the codes out. If it says CPS, stop driving the truck and have the CPS/Cam Sync checked out. A clicking to me sounds like your engine is not getting oil, either because the fram fell apart and stopped up, or your cam sync has crapped out, in turn stopping your oil pump from turning, meaning no oil circulating through the motor. Of course, this is worst case scenario, but getting that code checked is important. Either way, no oil pressure is Baaadddd, and will result in engine damage.

What is so bad with Fram filters? I have been using them for years and have never had any issues...

I think its more CKP stuff but since you asked about the Fram filters- you can find these videos all over ytube.

WOW! I have been enlightened. What is the best oil filter out there than for our engines? I have been doing a little research but haven't found any filters that seem to stand out among the rest.

Like Fordzilla80 said, clicking noise is not good at all. Personally I would stick with a Motorcraft filter and oil. I don't know if it is important, but Motorcraft synthetic blend flash point is same or better than what you might consider premium motor oil.

Motorcraft and Wix are the most recommended around here. Both feature anti-drainback valves, which keep the oil from draining out of the oil filter and into the oil pan when you shut the truck off.

First things first kiddo. Oil pressure gauge going to 0 and that clicking noise are your 2 main concerns right now. You need to figure those out. If your motor won't run you can get 25k miles out of even a Fram filter, but you'll have to get out and push it there. As far as AmsOil and Royal Purple, they may be fabulous products but a bit too expensive for me.

I just bought a '94 with the 3.0, 2 wheel drive, manual transmission. The problem I'm having is the oil pressure guage shows nothing but the engine runs fine. I'm mechanically inclined enough to know it does have oil pressure. I think it's just the oil pressure solenoid but I don't know where it is. I found what I THINK is the solenoid but I'm not sure. I found a solenoid looking unit on the passenger side of the oil pan. Would I be correct?? Thanks for any help.
