Exclamation My Serpentine belt came off?

My mom was driving my truck and came home last night to tell me my truck was smoking.
I was almost passed out, so I went out there this morning instead. I found my Serpentine belt was completely off of every Pulley as well as a dark liquid, which I'm 99.9% sure is oil, is all over the place, not like when you blow your engine and it ALL comes out, its just splattered everywhere.
I'll go take pictures in 15 minutes or so, but what the hell happened?
ANd how do I keep it from happening again?
Also would like to note that there isn't a single crack in the belt, and it was put on in August.

I had an 84 f150 the I broke the crankshaft on and the belt wouldn't stay on. Doubt that's ur problem. How long did she drive it with the belt off? Did it over heat? Water pump could be messed up.

First ,check your oil levels to find out where the oil
Came from.Be sure to seal which ever oil cap on securely

Put belt back on, and test run

I think it came off sometime yesterday when she got off work, it would have been a 30minute drive here, and then she left for about an hour or two to go visit a friend and come back home, so a total of a bout an hour to an hour and a half of driving with no belt. She said the power steering went out on her too, I'm afraid that could also be a problem.

How exactly do I check the water pump.

Also, I cant put it back on, because I moved here a week ago. I left all of my Tools back in Missouri.

I knew that. >_<

I cant seem to find where the oil came from either. Checked the level and its just above the "Add 1 quart" line

To put the belt back on? Don't u have an belt tensioner? If so all u need is a 1/2 rachet

that dark stuff you see is from the power steering pump.. when its not running and such the power steering fluid comes out of a little relief hole in the top of the cap. I had this happen when i was flat towing my ranger home after it broke once.. nothing to worry about... just check the fluid and put that belt back on..

I see that, its all on the tube, but theres stuff also on the battery, also power steering fluid?
Question is, how did it happen, what made it come off?

How do I tell if they're worn out?
Is there one of the pulleys thats supposed to move easier than the rest? Because I did find one that was easier to spin than the others. The flat one though, I thought it was supposed to be.

Even if one of your pulleys is jacked up (which I highly doubt) your tensioner had to have lost its pressure on the belt. The belt will still spin even if one of your pullys is stiff or frozen. The probability of a pully freezing is highly likely so....again....it is 99% of the time going to be your tensioner.

For what its worth, tell your mother to pull over the next time something isnt working the way it is supposed to. I have told my wife that countless times because I simple fix can turn into a catostraphic disaster.

Ford is selling the tensioner for just over $100. I am sure you can find a good replacement elsewhere.

Just went back out and checked, the Idler was free spinning, but that always is, right?
The tensioner was loose spinning, it had a very very slight resistance to its spinning, is this right?
Also the same with the AC Pulley.
All the others felt normal.

The tensioner puts tension on the belt so it does not come off of the pullys. Thats it. The belt spins over it and it keeps the belt tight.
