Should I get a Priest?
1998 Ranger 4x4 3.0 5 speed.
OK, so I have been having nothing but trouble. I don't even know here to start. But I'll give it a shot.
Truck is hard to start, when it does it runs on what seems like 3 cylinders, idling at about 300 rpm. Then it starts to die, truck shaking, then the idle shoots up to about 2500 and sits for about 5 seconds at 2500 and then the idle drops back down to about 300 rpm and the truck starts shaking, almost dies, then the idle shoots back up to about 2500 rpm and then the idle drops back down to about 300 rpm and the truck starts shaking, almost dies....this goes on for about 5 minutes.
I have replaced the MAF, EGR, 3 O2 sensors, AIC valve, throtle control valve....nothing.
So anyway, I have been under the hood when it is going through it's idle fluctuations, and I can hear in the air box that it is sucking air like crazy, I unlatch the air box and using my hand, I restrict some of the air flow, idle straightens out, I give it gas and the idle will stutter then start to drop and then it starts sucking more air, I restrict the air and the idle straightens out. I do this a few times, then the truck will hold an idle at about 1800 rpm, And I can now rev it with out a stutter, but the idle stays high.
OK, so now I jump in the truck and take off, I'm late for work. After about 10 minutes it starts to bog/stutter again, I pull over, pop the hood and hear the air box sucking the air again, I restrict it, it settles down, idle stays high again, but now, I disconnect the AIC and the idle drops to about 1000 rpm and it runs smoothly to work the rest of the way. Also, I do not reconnect the air box, the lid just sits on top, not latched down.
Do I need to get comprehensive insurance and let this demon "accidentally" catch on fire, or can someone help me?

Re: Should I get a Priest?
When you are restricting the air flow, are you doing it when it is idling high, low, or both?

Re: Should I get a Priest?
sounds to me like you bought a bad IAC valve. Only thing I can think of, especially since it runs better with the valve unplugged.

Re: Should I get a Priest?
Ok, I will take the AIC back tomorrow. I have changed the fuel filter also.
Thank you for all the help.
