I don't know what is up with my truck, but lately it is just drinking oil. I don't know where it's going.

It has reman'd heads, new head gaskets, new oil pan and gasket, front and rear main seals, etc..

Haven't owned the truck long, so I don't know it's history..Have only driven it after most of the work. It didn't seem to burn through this much up until right before the oil pan rusted out and started leaking - So I assumed that's where the oil was going..But now that that's fixed, it's still drinking a ton of oil.

Had the dipstick full, drove about 4 hours (less than a tank of gas), and it's towards the low end of the safe zone on the dipstick. Probably went through nearly a quart I'd guess.

I crawled all over under the truck and didn't see any leaks.. I'll check again when the weather clears.. When I bought the truck it had oil in the coolant, so I did the heads/headgaskets. No oil in the coolant since then, that I can find.

Is it possible this motor just burns this much oil? It's not smokey at all..So I doubt that's whats happening..Just wondering if anyone else goes through this much oil and what they think of it. I've owned a lot of cars, and none of them guzzled this much oil.

I imagine it's just leaking somewhere new, and I haven't spotted it yet.. At least I hope that's what's happening. Hopefully something that's easy to fix.

how long after you turned the truck off did you check the oil?

This time was probably a half hour after driving. So it should be settled by then..


I should also mention the truck runs great and gets around 21mpg.

Alright.. Hopefully I just had a small panic moment for nothing. I crawled under the truck a bit..Didn't seen any drips other than a tiny one on the new timing cover seal - and a little oil on the starter wires.

I decided to check the filter tightness for the fun of it. It was pretty loose and felt oily on it's underside. I probably got another half turn or more out of it. So I'm thinking that's all it was. Really hope so anyways. I'm sure I tightened it when I installed it..But who knows.. Maybe I forgot to do a final hard crank with my hand. That's the 3rd filter I've had on the truck since I bought it just a couple thousand miles ago. Changed the oil when I did the headgaskets, then again a hundred miles later to clear out any remaining gunk in oil. Then again for the oil pan. All are Motorcraft brand. I'm pretty sure I made sure the surface was clean before putting the new filter on. Sometimes old filter gaskets can stick to the motor.

Topped the truck back off and will check it the next couple drives and hope that took care of it.

i had my filter come loose once too and it scared the crap out of me, i can't afford to rebuild my motor right now
