Default "99 mid year head gasket change.

Hello all,

According to the guy at the parts store, the 3.0 had a mid year head gasket change starting on July 26 of '99.

Of course the engine I'm working on was installed on the 23rd of July of '99.

This is a little to close for comfort.

Does anyone know what was changed? Any tell tale signs to look for?

On another note, anyone run across a 3.0 that had no compression in numbers 3 an 6? This seems a little strange.

Thanks for any help.

Ran into the same problem. The inside of my door jam just says 07/99 which makes this very frustrating. Went to the dealer and found out my vehicle was built on 7/22/99.

Vehicles built on or after 7/27/99 use a smaller valve stem on the intake and exhaust valves (7 mm diameter). Older vehicles on or before 7/26/99 were built with the larger 8mm valve stems. You can verify this by trying to slip a 7mm or 8mm socket over the valve stems. On the older heads, you cannot fit a 7mm socket onto the valve stem.

The cross over date that Ford claims (7/27/99) seems correct since my vehicle was built on 7/22 and I have confirmed it has the older valve stems. It's definitely a good idea to perform the socket test above before you order a head gasket set to make sure someone hasn't changed the heads on your vehicle.

I believe the head gaskets are the same. When I went to the Ford dealer, they showed only one part number for the head gasket but they showed the date dependent part numbers for the valve seals. If you are ordering a complete head gasket set, it is important that you get the set designed for the correct date range above, otherwise it will come with the wrong valve seals.

Thanks. That makes more sense than 2 different head gaskets. I'm not doing the stem seals, so getting the correct size isn't a problem. I just didn't want to find I had ordered the wrong head gaskets.
