Poor Gas Mileage
I purchased my 2000 XLT about 10 years ago with approx 12K miles on it. It now has approx 61k miles. Up until about a year ago the gas mileage was as expected for a truck; i.e. 16-18 city and 19-22 hwy. However, over the past year it seems to have gotten increasingly worst with city driving dropping to 10-12 MPG. The engine runs and idles fine with no noticeable loss of power. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
maybe, some sort of hole around your cat? I know when i had a hole between my cat and mufflar i lost a lot of power, and got worse mpg.
if there is a hole, you can simply go to autozone and get some mufflar tape, And cover the hole.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
Thanks 90fordranger. Although I don't notice any appreciable loss of power, I will look for that.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
What kind of plugs are you running? I've heard questionable spark plugs can suddenly lead to a dramatic mpg reduction...

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
FTYI
I have a 2010 and in the city , well it just drinks gas . 4.0 engine . On the highway every day I can get around 300 miles , give or take in perfect weather . But in the city it is bad .. Less than 250 miles per tank sometimes , stop & go etc .
Good thing : 18 gallons
Half as much as my Ram1500 was ( 26 gallons ) And I would get about the same per tank for more ....

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
Good point about the tune-up. I've had the truck about 10 years and have never thought about a tune-up because it seem to be running so well. I'll give the tune-up a try. Thanks.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
There are so many things that could cause a loss of MPG, especially after such a long time without a tune-up. I did a tune-up on my old car I had, 94 mercury cougar, after 11 years of abuse and I went from 12 to 26 MPG highway. It all just adds up.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
I notice a differance in the grades of fuel on my older F150, How do the different grades affect the 3.0L Flex engines?

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
i would check the fuel filter, MAF, and spark plugs. you might want to replace the fuel filter and spark plugs anyways, and clean the MAF/airfilter.

Re: Poor Gas Mileage
DEFINITELY do a tune up if you haven't yet. If you've been driving the same car for a long time you may not even notice a gradual loss in power over time.
I bet when you give a tune up it's gonna feel like a different truck. Air filter, spark plugs, fuel injection cleaner. And eventually I'd do the tranny fluid/filter, fuel filter, coolant, etc..

I did all of that and more and went from burning a 1/4 of a tank on a 20 mile trip back to where it was supposed to be. I'd also had the rear end flushed, the radiator also got flushed and I also had the tranny flushed out too and it made a world of difference in mine.
