Default How much does your temp gauge fluctuate?

I have a '95 Ranger 3.0 and watching the temp gauge makes me nervous sometimes.

I bought it a few months back and put new heads and head gaskets on it.
New T-stat and cooling temp sensor.

Truck runs great, no problems. No bubbles in coolant, etc..

The truck seems to run a bit on the cold side though. It will bounce around from the cold line, to close to the half way point throughout driving. It's not like a constant bounce - sometimes it hangs out right over the cold line for most of the time..Once in a while getting closer to the half way point, then back down. Never close to overheating.

I'm guessing maybe it's the aftermarket t-stat I put in it..but I dont know - maybe it's normal for these trucks - which is why I'm asking.

Most vehicles I've owned the temp gauge just sat at one spot about 1/3rd of the way up the gauge.

Just kinda raises an eyebrow..Nothing I'm really worried about.

They shouldn't budge from the middle of normal once warmed up. You have either a failing thermostat or a failing water pump. Also be advised, there are two temperature sensors. One of them has a plug with 4 or 5 wires. This is for the computer. The other only has 1 wire, this is for the gauge.

Huh? It isn't supposed to move. That is the whole point. Once it reaches the middle of normal, it stays there.

yeah, and i hate that. i like my gauges to actually move as temps change. i can hook up an ultra gauge or a scan gauge and actually see when my thermostat opens, or keep tabs on the actual temp as i'm climbing hills or towing.

I forgot to mention the water pump is new as well.

I replaced the 4 pin sensor for the computer (broke the old one when doing the heads). Haven't touched the 1 wire gauge sensor.

Being that it doesn't come close to overheating...I'm not overly worried about it..but maybe I'll grab a new/different t-stat.

I'm not sure what the t-stat was rated for. I think I bought at from Autozone. Just whatever came up on their computer.

dashboard guages aren't all that accurate any way, but your temp guage still should not move once warmed up like FireRanger said. Plus, even if it did move, how would you be able to tell the actual temperature on the guage, and what purpose would it serve?

Alright, I was wrong. The t-stat was actually from Advance Auto. 195*

Here is the t-stat in my truck:

Also, I should mention the heat in the truck feels fine at all times. I've never noticed it fluctuate temperature.

Maybe the gauge or sensor is just screwed up..

But that's because it isn't changing enough to indicate anything. The gauge would have to be huge to accurately indicate changes of 5-10 degrees. And those 5-10 degree swings you see on your scangauge (I watch it too) is normal operation.

Well that's a correct temperature. And if your heat it good and hot, it is probably the single wire gauge sender that is shot.

Maybe the gauge is messed up. The needle should remain in the middle/a lil more on the cold side.

Yea..At least that's what I'll tell myself so I have one less thing to worry about. I don't feel like losing coolant to replace it. Already had the coolant system drained about 3 times since I've owned the truck.

Maybe my '10 ranger is broken

Naw but seriously, it's all good if the heat in the truck doesn't fluctuate. Either the sender, guage, or wiring along the way. Maybe you let the smoke out of the sensor?

Mines like yours but if you watch it it will twitch and it will not reach the mid point.... I tried to over heat it and the motor got hot as shit in the dessert sun but the gauge barly reach mid gauge... They told me to change the temp sending switch... they said it should be on the back of the block on the driver side and have 2 wires coming off... I bought the switch but haven't replaced it yet... it gos directly to the gauge
