Does it by chance start running fine once it warms up to operating temperature?

It seems that when it gets warm, it runs better. And once it starts running better I re-connect the AIC and it seems ok, but just for a few miles or so, then I repeat the process.

What about when you step on the accelerator and it comes up from idle. How does it run while not at idle?

When warm, it will idle at about 1100 rpm and smooth. It will run for about 15 minutes, I take it for a quick trip, 2 miles, and it's all good. Shut if off, starts rough, pull the AIC it almost dies, reconnect AIC, idle smooths but then starts idling rough, dis-connect the AIC, and it smooths out, idles at 1100 rpm's.

----------

When the idle smoothd out, it accelerates fine.

----------

When the idle smoothes out, it accelerates fine.

Easiest thing to check on the IAC is the filter. Some IAC have them and others do not. The filter if the IAC has one is under a black cap mounted on the IAC valve. With the filter removed the engine should perform properly. Replace the filter with a piece of FOAM Q-tip, one layer, and install filter and cap back on IAC valve. If no filter is on the IAC valve, remove valve and clean assembly. Go online to search IAC valve and there is pics and proceedure. An OBD 1 or II scanner may isolate the problem. Price for an IAC valve in Canada ranges from $99 to $200.

Best to find someone with a scanner. The codes stored will point you in the right direction. TPS is pretty expensive. A good shop can retrieve the codes, then you'll need a code book (Haynes, etc.) to know what trouble codes definitions. Buying a scanner still requires decifering the codes and understanding what you will have to check. Virtually every sensor in the vehicle can create drivability problems. The scanner will narrow down the sensors and point you in the right direction
