Default Just purchased a used Ranger...

Hey guys,
Glad to see their is such an awesome forum online for my new truck. Just bought my 2000 Ranger XLT 3.0L V6 with 148k miles on it out the door for $4658!

I am taking off work to complete some maintenance and was wondering what time of oils you all recommend for engine oil, tranny, differential, coolant, powersteering fluid, and brake fluid. I have the owners manual but was wondering if Motorcraft is really the best choice.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to FRF Alex!
That is a pretty high price for a Ranger with that many miles. I got mine for $4k and it only had 48k miles on it.

As for your question concerning the fluids and parts for your Ranger I would stick with factory specifications on all of them. Some things, like spark plugs for example, will cause many problems for you if you go and put "better" ones in.

Yea, price sounds on the high end. I can only imagine it's from a dealership. If it's a 4WD with lower miles or newer, I could see it.

Not sure I'd bother changing all fluids unless they look really bad. Maybe do the differential fluid, tranny fluid/filter, oil, fuel filter, etc.. Just make sure it has good spark plugs, wires, tune up, etc..

Thanks guys...I definately need to flush the coolant, power steering fluid, and the brake fluid. Havent had enough time off work to check the tranny and differential, but I would imagine they need to be flushed as well.

I did buy the truck from the stealership, but looked around for weeks and could not find a good truck in Southern California for a decent price. I really did not want to spend more than 5k on the truck so, still got what I wanted. The actual price of the truck was $4090 (taxes, registration, etc. are stupid expensive here).

I know tranny fluid is a subject of high debate, but I do not know if or when it has ever been changed. I was thinking about replacing it if it didnt look to good, also because it shifts a little hard in to 1st and 2nd gear.

Is MotorCraft my only choice for fluids? I am not finding any good places to purchase cheap fluids that meet Ford specs. I have always used top brands fluids (Mobil) for previous vehicles.....thoughts?

I wouldn't get too worried about only using Ford fluid. Maybe just avoid the store brand generics.

Ok....Just nervous cause this is the first vehicle I have owned that everyone is warning about using the wrong spark plugs.....using differential additives, etc. I'd hate to try and make this thing wrong better and do more harm then good!

MTMan, I bought it from a dealership so it could be a possible trade. I dont suppose your last name is Scott? Thats all I know about the other owners...

The truck was bought as-is without a warranty.....they offered me a bumber to bumper warranty for $1350, but was not willing to spend the extra money as my mechanical experience is good enough were something pretty bad would need to happen to make it worth it.
