twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
Okay first, this summer i need to decide whether i want new bigger wheels(35s) and a lift, OR put my money into performance. what would you do?
And is there a twin turbo setup for the 3.0? if there is, where can i get it? for how much? and where can it be installed (bc im no mechanic lol)?
if you dont suggest a twin turbo what do you suggest? bc the supercharger is impossible to find -__- and the turbo is the next runner up, esp a twin turbo!
OH and would you suggest a sequential or parallel? (im not entirely sure of the terms)
and again this is gonna be my goal for the summer and after i get either tires or turbo installed its gonna be that way for a long time because i wanna save money lol
thanks for the suggestions/help!

Twin turbo. and for a ranger, you are gonna want sequential. Or else you will start detonating. Now Im not sure if anyone makes turbo setups but you yourself can fab one up. The turbo isnt an easy mod in any terms. But it is the most rewarding thats for sure! And very fun.

what parts will i need?
how do i make it sequential?
will i need a tune after?
lol i am sorry i am not experianced with this. do you know of any known places that can do it for me? like rayco or watever

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
well with stock internals you can only run 5-6 psi or you blow it up, so a single turbo would do.
Other wise look up Tom Morana on google and look into his stroker kit, arp head studs, you may want to atleast port and polish the intake and exhaust, then you need to have someone fab up custom headers or something to put a turbo in, THEN you need to upgrade your ignition and upgrade your fuel injectors.
For all that, its gonna be a couple thousand dollars, due to the fact the 3.0 barely has any aftermarket support.
This is the only turbo 3.0 ranger that I know off, he is claiming 10 psi

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
I think i would supercharge the 3.0 instead of turboing it. if you need to tow anythging turbo is going to kill your low level towing power.

i wanted to supercharge it. that was my first choice but it is absolutely impossible to find a supercharger for it. =/

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
It's not worth doing.. It would take a lot more modification than you can imagine to do a decent job of turbo'ing a 3.0L than you're probably thinking.
I've put twin turbos on Mustangs before. It's a lot of work, and a lot of money. And that's with a vehicle/motor that has a TON of aftermarket support.
It would be easier, more reliable to just swap in a 5.0l like tons of other Ranger owners have done. Then modify it to make as much power as you want.

Tom Morana sells supercharger adaptors and superchargers for the 3.0, along with 99% of everything else performance for the 3.0

Whipple used to make a supercharger for it also

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
Hey, I don't quite know if I'm chiming in too late but I just found this thread while doing some research through Google. The problems you're facing with force inducting a Vulcan 3L in a Ranger is the high compression rate, ping, and detonation. I've been doing research now pretty much 24/7 and I've found quite a lot out. You can reliably run a 3L with a max of 5PSI and a slight tune with no need for a intercooler, or major modifications to the motors internals. The easiest route to go is to install a single, catback styled set up as seen through companies like STS. That set up would eliminate a lot of work and will not force you to modify your headers in any way. Also, running water/methonal injection will definately help prevent any detonation as explained by Snow Performance. I personally have been researching the best route to go for modifying my Ranger and I can tell you that initially you're not going to see huge performance gains, which is one of the many reasons they stopped making supercharger kits for these trucks. You'll at most see about 160-200HP at the wheels, so if you're expecting somewhere north of 250, you'll need a lot of money.
The costs and downtime associated with doing an engine swap will roughly come out to being equal to that of just force inducting your 3L. It will be about 2-4 grand in parts alone and quite a few hours of work. But, the fact that you didn't have to completely yank your engine and transmission, fabricate any frame work, body work, or engine bay work pays for itsself in the end. But be warned though, because not many have actually put force induction on the 3L, it would be wise to have another engine/transmission combo for ''future use'' to say the least.

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
My buddy works for a turbo shop. Not to long ago they remote turbo'ed a ranger with the 3.0,they ran it to 10psi and got close to 300 rwhp. Remote turbo is the way to go

whats the difference between turbo and remote turbo, is the power more even distributed with a remote, more controlled? or did I miss the carriage ride on this one?

Re: twin turbo for a 3.0? big decision!
The difference between an remote set up and a under-the-hood set up is that a remote set up is easier to install, the turbo will run cooler, and the air traveling to the intake will be much cooler both from seperating a 500 plus degree turobcharger, and forcing the air to run through piping that is subjected to cooler air running underneath the vehicle. You get less boost from that set up, but that's not such a bad thing as your boost charge will be cooler.
And yes a turbo set up is the way to go since it doesn't actually require any modifications to your headers, intake manifold or engine internals (to a degree obviously). And yes it is possible to run a 3L at more then 5 pounds, but that brings on a whole host of potential problems. Since most people still plan on using their Rangers as daily commuters, 5PSI is the cheapest, and possibly safest route to go since that amount of boost pressure doesn't require an intercooler, massively extensive custom tunes, and or intake modifications.
I believe if you want a referance point. The Whipple supercharger kit they offered from 2003 to like 2006 or so ran about 8PSI, with an intercooler. But the reason they stopped making it from what I was told through someone who used to deal with Whipple is because the engine life was dramatically cut short and too many people were reporting complete engine failure.
