Default Check Engine Light Help

Hey guys,

Im a noobie here, and a fellow Ford Ranger lover. There's only one problem. I don't know how to work on them. I have a 2000 3.0L 4x4

My check engine light came on today and im not sure why. I was wondering if it has something to do with my exhaust. The pipe rusted out directly behind the muffler.

Also, something that has puzzled me and a few mechanics is my 4x4 which is busted (one of the vaccum lines is broke). Anyway, I'll be driving down the rode and when i hit a bump or a pot-hole my truck makes this really loud grinding noise that shakes everything, but when i switch the 4x4 switch to 4x4 High and then back to 2wd the noise stops and the truck stops shaking. It has been doing it for a while now.

Any thoughts?

Have the code read, and post the code and we can help from there, it could be multiple things

And as far as the shudder in the running gear, that can only be diagnosed by going through and inspecting each component. I'm sure that you can work on a vehicle, it's the diagnosis you can't do. Study the components and learn the principles. Then weigh the facts.
You've got something going on that is either common to 2wd vehicles that is resolved by switching to 4wd and changing the load on those components, or you have something going on that is caused directly by a component related to having 4wd.

Sounds like you have a new hobby.

I took her to Advanced Auto parts today and the guy there read the code. It turned out she had a bad O2 sensor, which to my suprise only took me about 5 minutes to replace. I turned her on and the light was off.
