Re: exhaust gasket
If it's two flat flange surfaces yes. If it's a flared pipe with a seperate floating flange than either the pipe it mates to will have an rounded extrusion built in or a thick round "donut" shaped gasket will be used around the mating pipe.

Re: exhaust gasket
Looks like a lead ring. Does one flange have a round groove in it? And does it almost fit yet not quite want to snap in or is it way off?
Or does this thing have rounded edges on one side? Hard to tell from the picture.

Re: exhaust gasket
its like this and it fits on the extrusion of exhaust manifold but when i put it to the exhaust side of cat converter which is a flange it is wider in diameter of the flange,it doesnt fit on the flange, when i remove the connection i did not find a gasket, thats why im confused
----------
the flange does not have a groove,it just catches the extrusion of the manifold, the extrusion of the manifold have a groove, but the gasket wont even fit perfect to manifold i hope autozone accepts this to be returned

Re: exhaust gasket
I believe if u flip it over from the way it looks in the pic. The thinner side will slide into the pipe that has the cat on it and should slide on the manifold. But I could be wrong.

thats what i hope i would see but when i put this lead gasket it seats on top of that flange of the cat converter pipe and its quite big,

Re: exhaust gasket
With this type of gasket it should fit snug and stay on the side that has a bit of pipe sticking out past that flange but not seem to fit perfectly and certainly not be able to stay on the other side. But if the other side does have a flared lip and the narrow edge of the gasket starts to fit inside it, then it will press in slightly and seal when the connection is tightened up. You just have to tighten each side a few turns at a time until it's tight.
Not saying it couldn't still be the wrong gasket. You say there was no gasket there to begin with huh? That's odd. Some pipes do have a molded end that fits the flare without a gasket.

Re: exhaust gasket
The gasket should slide onto the manifold and the flange should slip over it. Lemme see if I can find some info.

thats what i thought too but when i torque it down to 30 ft lbs its so loose, so i figure there should be something to make it thick to fit the specified torque, and when i looked on the other side i see a black piece look like a rubber wedge between the pipe

Re: exhaust gasket
So it seems like it should fit if you went tighter? Allot tighter? Might be a false torque reading if the threads are in beat up shape. I'm gonna suppose you've been at this long enough to try wire brushing the threads though.
What you seem to need is a way to verify the part number based on a diagram. If an exhaust connection doesn't need a gasket, you'll know.

Re: exhaust gasket
Just remember, all it needs to do is not leak and not be noisy. If it's noisy - it leaks, so try tightening it up without a gasket and see if that does the trick.
If it doesn't, and you still can't get the straight scoop on a gasket, that's when I'd be breaking out the JB weld.
