i would recommend do a tune up plugs, wires, etc... basic stuff unless it was done recently. unless u think your truck is getting to hot u shouldnt have to replace the WP. i would reccomend a coolant flush. i would say u should sea-foam the engine since its probley never been done and thats 16 yrs worth of carbon build up.

and make sure ur tires are all in cheeck and properly inflated and carry a spare and some of that fix a flat stuff. then for such a long trip we always carry an extra 5 gallons of gas in the bed just incase.

sorry for writing so much this is what i would do

thats alot of miles through nowhere... I would consider getting both a AAA and CAA membership.

unless you just had it done I would:

Change your oil
Flush and replace your trasmission fluid
fill up your wiper fluid
air up your tires
speaking of tires, how is your tread? bad? consider getting new tires
replace air filter
consider new spark plugs
get your local ford dealership to do a multi-point inspection to see if they can find any problems
consider replacing breaks , pads, shoes etc if needed

after doing all this crap drive it for 2 to 3 weeks to make sure it dosn't die on you, the quickest way to have a mechanical problem in a truck is by doing this type of stuff t0 it.

I wouldn't bother fixing things that aren't broke. You could run into unexpected issues in the process of working on it.

I would just give it a good tune up, keep some safety basics in the car with you (tools, tape for hoses, zip ties, blankets, flashlights, maybe a little food and water, etc, )make sure you have good AAA.

At least once a day when you make stops, make sure to check all the fluids. Top off as needed.

Then go for it. That's not too bad of a trip. I've done long trips in old cars before.

Its not so much the length of the trip, while long, its the desolateness of western Eastern alaska and western canada, not to mention Northern montana or north dekota depending on where he enters the US.

There is just no civilization for ever.
