Default RPM's increase while shifting thru gears

I've had my 98 4x4 since 2005, and since the time I bought it, from time to time when I go thru the gears, the rpm's will increase while I have the clutch pedal in. This also happens when I am coming to a stop sign, but I have figured out, when coming to a stop, if I slowly creep up to a stop and keep the rpm's low, I can control the rpm's from increasing.
At one time I had read a service bulletin about this issue and it had said it was due to a wiring issue. I haven't been able to find the bulletin again and I've called some ford dealerships and haven't been able to get any help from them.
Has anyone here experienced this problem or knows / have heard about it.

Thanks
Danmar

Doh, this is a common happening, but it is escaping me right now I'll post on it tomorrow after I have slept. (party'd all weekend at friends wedding, running on alcohol. . . )

IAC, check it/replace.
Check hoses and fittings for build up, clean everything properly, remove bodies that need to be to clean out without blowing debris further in engine.
If there is heavy debris present clean and run again, if still screwy the replace IAC. HTH

typically with this issue it run up 300-500rpm, it was an issue with carbbed engines that the IAC was created to negate. Hangover's suck. . .

Thanks to all, I will most likely replace the IAC and TPS (this will be the start of my preventive maintenance parts replacements) and go from there. I am getting some pinging also and will probable replace all the vacuum hoses as well. I need some feedback on the what would be the best performance chip on the market for my 3.0 v6. I have done some research, and of course all have mixed reviews, so I need some experienced advice on this one. I will post my results as I start replacing parts.

I had this same issue, and was told that the cruise control, since it was entirely electric, stuck, so I just disconnected the thing and haven't had the problem since. Hope that helps.

My 2.3 does the same thing untill it warms up.
Kind of wierd that you can be sitting still at idle & it's 900rpm but when I shift the RPMs font drop. Also if I am coming to a stop sign I will put it in neutral & coast to the stop. The RPMs won't go lower than 1600 untill I come to a complete stop.

I just figured it was designed to do this for what ever reason.

IAC valve. When two took a crap on me, it did'nt raise much between shifts...but coasting towards a stop light with the clutch pushed in, it would stay at about 2300 rpms until I got to right about 2mph.

If the rpms skyrocket between shifts, check your TPS(throttle position sensor)

Huh that's odd there must be a hang up in the throttle or cruise cables, as the tps is a two way switch, one position computer idle control controls it the other is cable or actuator driven. . . . . tricky.

Is there a Guru here with the resistance specs to test them? STL Maybe? ? ?

Oh and Wannabe it typically won't jump that high, it is usually subtle but it can go higher. As for the TPS it is designed to control the idle when the cables are at rest(i.e. butterfly is closed) Granted things can happen that stump me to the end of God's green earth, but if it wasn't registering properly then the cables would have to be pulling one or the other, to cause the rpm's to rise or maybe the butterfly is sticking for some odd but feasable reason.

If it is under warranty go for it. Should be an in and out diagnosis. Make sure you post the findings for others. G/L

Had to replace both iacv and TPS to get rpm to stop increasing between shift on my 2002 4X4 4,0. Did IACV first and it help then did the TPS and it now run great with no problems.

where can i find the IAC on an 04 4.0? i understand its somewhere on the throttle body but can anyone post up a picture or general location? i'm also having this problem, and i also saw a TSB that said this problem could be fixed with a software update done by the dealership, anyone ever heard of this?
