3.0 gas mileage

What's to be expected from a '99 3.0L Auto 4x2 supercab? I'm new to this truck and got about 16.5 MPG on my first tankful of regular - a little dissapointing. It does ping a little when hot and under moderate load.

hate to break it to you, but 16.5 is probably gonna be your average for city driving. i get about 16-17 mpg in city with a 3.0l reg cab auto. on the highway, youll find if you drive it right you'll get around 23 mpg. a few key mods can get you up to 25 mpg, unfortunately those mods only slightly help in the city. your driving style is gonna best determine the mpg you get with the truck.
edit: you can also purchase a scangauge II, that will help your driving habits because it gives you real time info and feedback such as current mpg and tank mpg. it helped my driving habits a bit.

I'm sure you can do a bit better than that. What RPM are you usually at when it shifts through each gear?

it also depends on how your city is laid out, here i ave to stop every 500 yards it seems like becuase of lights so breaking and starting always kill mpg, but the 3L tends to shift around 2500 for me when i hit 30 mph, then it shifts again at like 45 goes down to 1800 then at like 55 its a 2000 rpm

Filled again today: 18.3 MPG. I feel a little better about that. There's a little more highway driving in the mix this time. Also, switched to synthetic oil and probably used the AC less. I'm starting to become one with the new truck

I'm pretty sure you can get better mileage than that out of a 99... The Old 93 I had a few years back had the 3.0 with a 5-speed and I was able to pull averages of 23-26 mpg. It was mostly highway but it didn't drop much in the city, it was still about 19-20 all city

you have a manual and he has an auto, the difference in mpg between the two is substantial, so much so that it almost makes it worth doing a manual conversion just for the added mpg

i wish i could say the same for my current ranger, its mileage is horrible, if i'm lucky i'll get 200 to the tank

Both trannies are 5-speed, and I get better mileage than most people with the stick.

i know if i had a stick 3.0L i would be getting much better mileage than i am right now, not on the highway though

wu hu! 20.01 mpg on the last half-tank! I suppose because it's more than half highway, but maybe because I have a happy truck.

Mine just came off the 1/2 tank mark @ 255 miles
