Default Another Coolant Leak Problem

I have a coolant leak that appears on the driveway in the area of the oil drain plug. It seems to only leak when the engine is cold; i.e. overnight. It is not a big leak, only leaks about a quart of coolant every 2 or 3 weeks. Engine runs and idles fine (except for seemingly poor gas mileage ). I don't detect any coolant in the oil. Any ideas are appreciated.

I have a similar problem. Slow leak, could occasionally smell antifreeze. My first symptom was that the heater was cycling between heat/cool. That's when I discovered the radiator level was low.

Took it to a repair shop where the mechanic looked for a good 30 minutes (without the motor running) and couldn't find a leak! (No charge in case you were wondering.) He did notice the antifreeze had crystallize where the water pump bolts to the block. His suggestion was to keep a close eye on it and put a large sheet of cardboard under the motor, hoping any spotting would help him locate the leak. I keep a gallon of water behind the seat in case I need it.

No help I'm afraid.

Thanks MikeD, My XLT has never run hot. I keep the 'overflow' about half full and add coolant about once a month to keep it that way. So far, even using a dye, I have not been able to identify the origin of the leak. Guess I'll keep looking unless it gets so bad that I'm forced to take it to a shop.

Another thing to look for is leakage from around the back of the engine. If you see it coming from the back of the engine, it could be either a head gasket or a punctured hose. Check the front of the engine for a leaky water pump, punctured hose, or head gasket. Also check the heater hoses. Hope this helps!

Had a similar problem also. Coolant was leaking and it seemed to be coming from the back of the motor. Well it wasn't,it was coming from the temperature sensor housing on the front of the motor and running down a hose therefore making it look like it was coming from the back. This a dealer part and is a pain in the a$$ to change. Hope this may help

Coolant on the back of the motor can be coming from anywhere. There's a good 30-80mph wind blowing across the motor. Any fluid that leaks out can run backwards along the engine.
