I'd put the new plugs in and see how it runs before you do ANYTHING else. No matter what, those Bosch pieces of crap were causing a huge problem. So see what happens when you rectify the one KNOWN problem before blindly replacing other things and pouring stuff in the tank.

Yes, which is exactly what happens when you put Bosch plugs in a ford truck motor. They work for a little while then everything goes to hell. That's why I keep telling you that you have the wrong plugs and you need to fix that known obvious problem before you try guessing at other things that may or may not be wrong.

Alright changed my plugs now all the plugs on the passenger side reeked of unburnt gas. But like i said i have no check engine light on. Could this be my coil getting f'd up or is it just the plugs suckin dick? I'll give it a week, since i drive about 50-100 miles a week. So if i reach 50 miles and i'm at 3/4 tank i know i'm right on track. Thanks for all the help again!

How's the engine running, is it smooth and power is as expected? Compared to before?

Yea, everything is pretty much normal. Its smooth, not jerking or rough idling. But the 3 plugs on the pass. side really got me wondering. Hopefully it was just the crap bosch like you said. I'll give it about 50 miles and i'll see what happens. I'll probably re check the plugs on the pass side to see if they still reek of unburnt gas. I know my wires are good... So if the plugs or wires aren't it... Then i'll have to get the coil tested somehow? Thanks for all the help FireRanger!

Yea i replace all the plugs with motorcraft and i've got my MPGs back! i'm hitting 50 miles and only at the 3/4 mark! So yea i'd say i'm getting 14-16 now. And i don't have to step on the gas as much to speed up. Well thanks for all the help guys especially FireRanger. Now i can rest at ease.

Hi gang...I found this thread searching for answers to a similar problem..My 1998 2.5l is getting horrible mileage, but seems to me making power just fine.
I just did a full tune up 2 months ago with new Autolite plugs, wires, fuel filter etc. and although throttle response and power seemed to improve, no improvement to mileage. By quick calculations I'm getting around 10 mpg in town and only marginally better on the highway.

Since FireRanger said the Autolite plugs are ok to go with, what should I be looking at next? Someone mentioned the injector rail? or maybe injectors? Will Seafoam take care of that? if so, do I have to replace plugs after treatment since they are only a couple months old ( it's a bitch to get at some of them!)

Also, this may not be related, I am burning oil at 116K. Probably about 1 quart every thousand miles.
I did replace the PCV valve when I did the tune up since it was recommended by another Ranger owner...anything that could be related between this and the fuel economy? (besides the obvious :rings)..like I mentioned, power seems ok, at least compared to what I remember it being like when it was new.

Thanks in advance
Cheers!
Josh

Everyone makes them differently. Motorcraft is factory and Autolite's are identical. I don't know why our engines don't work right with other brands. If there is scientific reason, I don't know what it is. But it is quite well established that any other brand usually fails and Bosch is the worst of them.

How are you calculating you MPG, before we dig deeper into what may or may not be wrong?
