Default Everything having to do with gas is irritating me!

Long story short, I have a 1996 Ford Ranger XLT, and for a while now you could smell gas between the bed and the cab...originally when I got it from my brother he claimed the pipe going from the gas cap to the tank had a leak in it and you used to only smell it when you got gas. Somehow after a problem with my truck where I barely had any power when stepping on the gas (possibly irrelavant here) and started smelling gas all the time while driving and after turning it off, along with my gas gauge going down more than I thought it should every time I turned my truck off, I got in a wreck, and the insurance decided to replace the filler pipe along with the new bumper assembly. Now I can't smell gas except when I drive a lot, and then it's only out of a hole (like a loop hole for rope in the bed?) and it's not nearly as bad...but without making this supposedly short story any longer, my gas gauge is still going down, although not as much, but this time it goes down as I'm driving instead of when I turn it on, and when I step on the gas I get kind of a grinding feel and noise too, which I don't remember before the wreck.

So I suppose I have a few questions. Should my gas gauge go down that much? How many MPG does a 96 Ranger XLT 3.0 get usually on street driving? Any idea what the grinding noise and feel is (I wish I could explain it better, but it only does it when I'm stepping on the gas) and should I ever smell gas between the bed and the cab at any time anywhere?

The gas smell could be the filler tube, fuel sending unit, or an exhaust leak. If it's an exhaust leak, you will lose fuel milage. Normally, in my 2001 3.0L, I get 12 in the city and about 16 on the highway. I can reach 200 miles to one tank in the city and 300 miles per tank on the highway. As for the grinding noise.... it could be a bearing where you got hit in the accident. You might want to check your hub assemblies and axle. Hope this helps!

I had a gas smell on my 95 B3000 a few years back and the strap that hold the gas tank up had rusted and let the tank drop down just a bit so it cracked the metal pipes that come out of the fuel pump and turn 90 degrees to the fuel lines. I had to replace the fuel pump...

I just got 200 miles on a half tank of gas split between highway and city, now that the gas smell is gone. So I assume the problem other than that grinding is gone now?
