Default Starting problem

I just bought a ranger, and within a week I am having a starter problem. Every time I turn in over, instead of hearing it fire up, it just makes a clicking noise. I thought it could be a cold batter, or maybe the battery is not charging, but I wanted some thought before I go back out and work on it. I am hoping its not the alternator, but I think we can eliminate that because the truck would have turned off on the road, the connections are pretty tight, haven't checking the battery yet to test if it is good.
