Power Chips Question
First time user to the site so try not to ruff me up.
I Recently Purchased a 98 Ranger with a super cab/step side.
The truck is stock, and I need to be able to get max gas mileage and some added horses. Keep in mind I need to drive this roughly 64 miles 5 days a week. I still need money for beer.
What are the best add on bolt-ons or Power chips out there? It’s your time to brag to some one who only knows about small block 289's.
Educate me.
Thanks

Re: Power Chips Question
I prolly wont be able to help much but being the first post to your thread I will try and help. I personally hate when I post things and I hardly get any asnwers especially when I see all the views and know that there are tons of people on here and other sites that could answer my questions and know the info so ill try and do my part. first your going to be told that the SEARCH button should become your best friend!!!! It will be hard to find exactly what you need and sometimes after hours and hours of searching and not being able to answer your question, your going to post a thread and someones going to have the link or something like that. Yes can be frusturating but you get used to it ha. Secondly, create a profile and avatar type of thing so everyone knows what your working with and can help this process alot, for instance you didnt say what engine, tranny, that type of info that really is important especially in a question like this. One dont get some dumb chip or plug n play type of thing like that. If they say plugging in this chip will added 50 horses dont buy it. Like usual, if its too good to be true it prolly is. I would suggest either new pulley's, e fan, air intake, exhaust, do maint. new fluids, plugs, clean maf, iac, them types of things (believe me it helps alot more than you think), check tire pressure, watch how you drive and drive like your trying to get good gas mileage. this is a truck, not a race car.......... Many will say buying air intake kit like K&N is stupid and can do the cheap mods and they work just as well for much less. Im not saying which is better, its personal preferrence and all these are just ideas. Im sure im forgetting some things but its 4am at my house and im tired and shouldnt be up this late on the ranger forums, but come on everyone still does it ha. But welcome to the site, like I said im sure I have forgot things and I am in no way stating which one of those are better and that others that post are wrong, those are just some ideas that you can think about and put together with what others post and through searching to make YOUR best educated guess on what to do. Happy ranger'in.......... Zach.

Re: Power Chips Question
Sorry about the delay.. Thank you first and foremost. The truck is a 98 XLT super cab with a 3.0 V6 auto/ac. Approx 119000, but I picked it up for a smokin deal. No complaints I have yet to take photos because I have'nt had a moment to buy some rubbing compound and buff it out. AZ vehicle that has been gargaed for over a year. Interior needs some attention as well.

Re: Power Chips Question
I'm a 4.0 driver that drives like you do, mileage wise. I know we drive 2 different motor/tranny setups, but I get an average of 20 mpg with no engine mods other than the airbox mod. All I do is maintain the fluids, filters, and such. I will recommend doing a Seafoam treatment, then plugs and wires as soon as you get done Seafoaming. Do a simple tranny fluid/filter change. Run some Lucas fuel injector treatment every 5k or so.
Basically just maintain the truck. There are add ons you can buy to hp and mpg, but by the time you reap your money back on those you have blown the savings out the window.
Dig around on this site, there are tons of tips and tricks.

Re: Power Chips Question
Another thing that Z hit on above. Keep the MAF and IAC clean. Clean the throttle body too.
Amazing as it sounds, unless you're trying to build a drag truck, it's the little things that count.

Re: Power Chips Question
I read the article and the OP is spot on with his details. I will admit that I just skimmed the last little bit, once I realized he knew what he was talking about. That being said, after you Seafoam, go ahead and choke up the pesos and change the plugs and wires. Seafoaming fouls the plugs something terrible. So understand that once the engine is clean, there is no sense leaving bad plugs. Motorcraft plugs and wires. Don't try to go all "fancy" with those crazy new fangled plugs. Also like he stated, I wouldn't run the engine very long with the Seafoam in the crankcase. The carbon that you're releasing into the oil is going to kill the viscosity, therefore rendering the oil pretty much useless.
This next part is just my .02 worth. I'd go ahead and switch over to Valvoline Max Life oil. I've run it in every high mileage vehicle I've owned, and personally I believe it's one of the best oils out there. Stick with Motorcraft filters, can't really stress that enough.
Remember, you can't beat that truck like the neighbor's dog and expect it to last unless you take care of it.

Re: Power Chips Question
Thanks for the tips. By the way I took your advice and purchased the valvoline max for 100k * and stuck to the basics plugs wires air filter the only thing other than that has been some "mothers" to establish a balance from the abuse it may have taken. Also drained the power steering fluid and started new.
Question are the power steering units alway kind of whinie? Seems like a small pump but I have been thinking about changing it out.

Re: Power Chips Question
Most older Fords I've worked on have a slight whine to the PS pump. Probably just age of the pump. Remember though, the smaller the pump, the less drag on the motor, which means more power and mpg. Of course, with the 3.0, don't expect the greatest fuel economy. The motor just aren't know for it. The best numbers I have heard, and this is driving as easily as possible not going above 65 on the highway, has been 26 mpg highway.

Re: Power Chips Question
I am a Canadian, and this may seem like a dumb question. What is seafoaming?
