You can use Motorcraft filters, thats what is recommended. I found them at Walmart for around 4.00 each and its only about 30cents more than Fram

I didnt either til I saw a thread on here. I used Fram all my life and learned Motorcraft would be the best by members recommendations here. I use synthetic oil, so I figure, Motorcraft is recommended and its only about .30 cents more than Fram so it wouldn't hurt.

this is true, and JT, i wasnt trying to be a dick but i know what these kind of threads turn into, ive seen it on every forum i belong to from F-150's and rangers to snowmobiles and even the outdoors forum im on. everyone has a different opinion about what the best oil/ oil filter is and it usually turns into a dick measuring contest. that being said, im with Clinton on this one, Motorcraft is what i use.

i know one of the big issues with fram from what ive read is that the anti-drain back valve inside the filter is made from some sort of cardboard instead of silicon or rubber like the motorcraft and other filters have. in some cases the cardboard deteriorates and ends up in the oil system and can clog oil ports that can cause major engine damage. the crappy design of that valve also can cause dry starts because it allows the oil to drain back into the pan instead of staying in the system when the engine is shut off. i used to run the fram tough guard on my ranger and i noticed alot of valve train clatter during cold starts and that completely went away when i started using motorcraft filters. My F-150 has the 5.4 3V V8 in it and some years are known for cam phaser noise and Ford has attributed some of it to the use of fram filters, in fact some dealerships were refusing to service some trucks that had valve train noise if they came in with a fram filter on them.

Agreed with all that's been said. When I bought my Ranger the dealer had used some cheap pos filter from one of those cheap chain "service centers". As soon as I could get the time I drained the oil and the filter and put in fresh Synthetic and a Motorcraft filter.

Almost every regular maintenance part on a new Ford is Motorcraft brand, from the oil filter, to the battery, and to the plug wires. Motorcraft makes alot of stuff, and is about all I like to put in/on my truck.

Best filter is quite difficult to know for sure. Lots of opinions..but no proof. Look at this conversation about oils and filters...http://www.automotiveforums.com/t488...d_filter_.html read it all and then what to think is the best....really not answered. Anti-drainback valves...an issue perhaps with a filter mounted sideways like on the 2.3 4cyl.,..not on a motor like the 4.0L V-6 which has it mounted almost vertically straight. Who can claim they know for sure any oil or filter is way better can maybe also give you winning lottery numbers. Changing the oil at recommended intervals with a new filter is what you should do. Avoid the cheapest of both unless you change it even more frequently...some people do....oil change every 1,000 miles. I doubt that FRAM filters are total crap. These filters are long around and may be a better filter..allegedly the oil will be less black at changing..if so that would be the closest to proof you will find...http://www.frantzoil.com/home.html

I think the amsoil filter would be my pick for "best" they use a different type of media than all others.

I use one of the following, depending on whats on sale with the oil. Either Mobile 1, K&N or Bosch.
