Default Hydro locked 3.0

I have an 06 ranger ext cab with a hydro locked motor. Well its not locked but I believe I bent a rod, she is ticking very bad. Thought my warranty would have covered it but of course they are not. In other words I need a 3l motor. Now I've read that the 4l motor will not bolt up to my tranny so I geuss I'm going to be sticking with the 3l. Any ideas of where I can get a used motor, or if it would be cheaper to rebuild the bottom end? I've never messed with internals before so not to sure about rebuilding.

I'm pretty sure if you bent a rod, you'd hear a knocking, not a ticking.

How did you come to the conclusion you hydro locked the engine? Did you submerge the truck in a puddle?

Yes, we were out mudding and got to deep, stalled out then wouldn't start for a bit. Once we got it started it was mis-firing real bad and ticking. I figured it was a valve stuck open but I had the dealer look at it, thinking they were going to repair it under warranty. Also either the block is cracked or the oil pan gasket went out in the process.

Yea, you probably got water in it. I still think it should be knocking if you bent a rod. Kinda sounds like your piston is hitting a valve or somethin, but I don't know. Did you pull the valve covers to see if everything is fine up on that side?

I'll probably pull the valve covers off this weekend depending on the weather.

Will the 4.6 out of an explorer fit, like motor mount line up and everything? Or I could find a 4l with a tranny if everything lines up.

Sorry to hear this but I don't think a warranty would ever cover that. YOU submergered the truck I am pretty sure the fact that you caused the failure it would automatically releive the dealer from any warranty work. Just out of curiosity did they look at you like you were crazy lol. i would start calling local salvage yards. What did the dealer say needed to be fixed or what exactly the problem was??

rebuilding a motor is cheaper than buying a new one. i'd personally try to take the opportunity to put in a morana stroker kit in it, becuase stock 3.0s are low in power.

compression will be low on a cylinder w/ a bent rod, also will be a bear to turn at the crank shaft in certain places with the plugs removed.

Could do a 5L V8 swap or 4L V6 swap, but ideally would want a donor vehicle to save on money for all the stuff you need to transfer over. Used low mile 3L would be cheapest route I think.

They where the ones that mentioned the bent rod. I've searched around for rods.but don't seem to exist.

@DHEM: About how much does this stroker kit run for? Will I need head gasket spacers or anything regarding the heads or fuel injection?

@Psychopete: I'll be sure to check the compression, I know for sure that I won't be able to get a donor vehicle.

I'll have to tear into it this weekend.

Just checked out the stroker kit, very expensive. Not a very good bang for the buck.

ugh..... Water, Mud. Hate that shit. I dropped my yz250f in a pond once, we were riding across it, hit a log and down she went. I had to completely strip the motor down, clean/replace EVERYTHING!!! I learned my lesson real quick about water! I stay away. lol

So I've decided to put a bigger motor in, not to sure which one yet. Either the 4.6 or I believe the 5.4 triton. I won't starts the swap until march. I know I'll need the motor tranny and dme. Motor mounts prob tranny mounts and maybe a shorter driveshaft. Any suggestions on what else I may need? I plan to keep the budget under 2k but as I've done projects like this before it can be more or less.

Done some research and found a site that gives me a run through of how to swap in 5.4, but of course theres a catch... its for like the 90's ranger. Not to sure if anything has changed. But its a great DIY, includes all the part numbers of the motor mounts you'll need, clearances, and just about everything.

Also my ranger is only 2wd, is there a way where I can mount a transfer case and everything else. Considering I have torsion bars in the front I would need to redo the whole front end.

Might want to look into a 4.6/5.4 swap a little more - those motors are huge and will require a lot of fab work to install. Been done, and I am sure it's an awesome swap, but not as common due to it's difficulty. But go for it if you think you can complete it.

Yeah, I read into it a little, if I could find a efi 302 I would go that route. But that 5.4 seems like it would be more fun. After bills and everything I have a good chunk of change at the end of the month. I'm going to start pulling the motor and trans next weekend. I'll ne sure to take pics. Most likely stroke the 3.0 and sell it as a long block with accessories.

Figured I'd get some internal work under my belt for once. The tranny and motor have about 55k on them so if someone wants either or let me know.

It's a five speed, clutch may need to be replaced soon, not to sure.

I could always part out the motor also.
