Default got some camshaft sensor questions

I had my check engine light come on over the summer. I got it on the diagnostics test and it said it was my camshaft sensor that malfunction and this morning on my way to work the check engine light came on and its reading the same thing.
The first time I have the check engine light come on I had the "chirp of death" and once I replaced the sensor, it was gone. This time I do NOT have the chirp of death and its telling me I need a new one. Also when I changed out my camshaft SENSOR the top of the syncronizer looked fine, Ive seen some pics of some bad ones and the mechanic at the shop showed me how it should look.
Now that it is telling me I need a new sensor, should I just replace the sensor AND the syncronizer? Kinda confused on whats going on.

How many miles does it have on it?

I've heard some cases of the Cam Sync not exhibiting any noise at all, but still wearing out. The only way to tell if it's any good or not is to pull it out and visually inspect it. Look for any signs of wear, especially on the gear. If you have any doubts about the condition of anything on the sync, replace it. Usually, it's recommended to replace the cam sync at around 80,000 IIRC. Unfortunately, the cam sync spins the oil pump, and under a major failure, the oil pump will stop spinning, thus causing the truck to lose oil pressure. So it's important to monitor the condition of the cam sync.

If you see any fluctuations in the oil pressure, put the truck in neutral and shut her off, as soon as it is safe to do so. It only takes a few seconds for the engine to destroy itself when there's no oil pumping through it. Paying a tow bill to take the truck home for further diagnostics is alot cheaper than paying for an entire new engine.

Ah im just going to bite the bullet and replace it. Didnt really want to but I could never afford a new engine. I have seen the oil gauge fluctuate. So Im going to call it quits after reading that, no need to gamble.

its got 180K. I have no history of whats been done to the truck in the past other then what I have done. I got the truck at 134K.

Was your replacement a Ford OEM or aftermarket unit like Dorman? If it was anything other than the Ford unit I would replace it. I replaced mine the first time with a Napa unit (Dorman) and I had to replace it within 6 months. The poor tolerences seemed to be the issue with the aftermarket units.

Very good thinking man. Make sure you spend the extra and go with the Motorcraft unit, because as littleblue stated, the aftermarket ones have a high failure rate.

it is my friend but im not too sure about this situation. This truck is my only vehicle. It could take a week for it to come in, think I have that much time to be driving around like that?

did an ebay search, all they have is dorman. Did a dorman search(for reviews and such), all they had were horror stories.
Mines getting returned tomorrow because that was what I bought.

I paid $140 for mine through the local dealer about 18 months ago. I know the price seems steep. I found a couple of places online that claim to have the Motorcraft part:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...385810-2394361 - $98 and offer 3, 2 day or next day shipping.

http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/...ek+Google+Base - $108 offers only ground shipping.

Hope this helps...

I think the general consensus was that Rock Auto was okay. Just make sure you get a Motorcraft one, because you definitely don't want to go cheap on this, especially for your only ride.

I just paid $295.00 for a new cam synchronizer and a new cam sensor. Worth it to me though. Better then a new 5k motor. But deff go with a motorcraft on both parts!! don't screw around with this!!

i mean 140 doesnt sound crazy steep. I dont really want to pay 180 but i will if I have to. is motorcraft and the "ford brand" two different brands?

I think I read your previous post Ranger_egde, you paid 295 and had it installed by a shop correct? Ill be doing it with a buddy so it wont run me that high. Im deff not going to fool around, I just hope tomorrow I can find a motorcraft one(none of the stores I called today had any) and tomorrow is my only day off for about a week.

I have been hearing a low whistle noise around 2500rpm for a couple seconds then goes away. If I lift off the gas when I hear it, it goes away. It doesn't do it long enough for me to pull over and listen where it's coming from.

how hard is it to replace the syncronizer without the "removal tool"?
Do you just pull on it and it comes out? (probably not easy) but is that the way its done?
