Default Ringing noise can't pin point it

Hey Guys,

I have a 2001 3.0L and need some help. Just recently, within the last 2000 miles, I have begun to hear a ringing noise from the front right of my engine. It seems to like 2000 RPM. The noise is almost like rubbing your finger on a crystal wine glass. Does anyone have thoughts on what this might be?

Thanks!

MAF Whistle? take a look around your air intake stuff - a leak there can whistle -- the MAF itself can also whistle/moan Both are kinda like the oscillation of a finger running the rim of a glass -- usually pretty easy to diagnose -- just wiggle your intake as you're hearing the noise to see if there are pitch or other changes.

Also, could be a bit of a bearing or belt issue - though I'm not sure I'd characterize those sounds as "ringing"

Thanks! I will give the intake a check. I am already changing my belt pulleys because they have worn unevenly. I will give it a go and let you know what I find.

I have a similar noise around 2500rpm. It lasts a few seconds and goes away, depending on engine speed. Mine hasn't done it where I can pull over and listen. Post what you find. Thnx.

Changing the idler pulley (not the tensioner) and putting a higher quality belt on seemed to fix it. I prefer Gates rubber products. O'rilley auto parts carries their stuff.

I am beginning to wonder if it's not my starter jingling... I'm about at the point of giving up and trading it in on a newer ranger.

yes, it really is that annoying to me! I cannot explain why it bugs me so much, it's loud enough that I can clearly hear it over the stereo (need better one) and the rush of air pouring in all 4 door seals!

any thoughts?

it's the transfer case. front output, without the front shaft, it's a very peaceful and expensive ride.
