Default is it the indler pulley or the belt that causes the squeak?

I have a squeak in the FRONT of my engine so its not the chirp of death from the camshaft sycronizer.
I bought a new belt today, should I also replace the idler pulley? It squeaks at idle sometimes.

Does it still squeak with the new belt on?
What kind of belt did you buy?
How long has it been since you replaced the belt?
How does it squeak? When accelerating, when idling, both, sometimes both, sometimes neither?

Mine would squeak on and off it just depending on if it felt like it that day basically... lol. After looking at the belt the belt and pulleys were glazed, roughed up the pulleys a bit with 400 grit sandpaper and cleaned afterwards with brake cleaner, and bought and put on a new Gates belt.

I would try a new belt if I were you, maybe with some more information I could be of more help.

duralast belt. Guy at the parts store said gatorbacks were no longer being made. Duralast bad choice? I still have the reciept and no I have not put it ( i have been really busy with work). The belt didnt look too bad. It was SUPPOSED to be repaced about 2 years ago when anything and everything done to my truck was done by a mechanic at a shop. I dont trust the shops anymore and so I dont know if they replaced it or not.
I was thinking about doing the same. putting the belt on and cleaning up the pulleys and then seeing how it is.

It squeaks when it wants to. Sometimes it is good. When it does squeak it will squeak at low speeds when im not on the gas and of course at idle.

And again miles probably count. Im not sure how many miles you had when you did this, but Im sitting at 180K right now so the pulleys may not be in the same condition as yours were.

idler pulley = tensioner pulley. Check your deflection.

What happens to the sound when you turn your steering wheel when it makes noise?

We started using Bando belts at the shop and I'm running one with no noise like the Gates and Goodyear made.

Sound stays the same when wheels are turned. Does that mean anything? Also I saw on youtube that some engines you loosen up the idler pulley to get the belt off. Is that the case or I understand that some are just spring loaded so a crow bar is a good tool to have?

Remove a belt by inserting a 3/8 drive ratchet into the 3/8 inch sqaure hole in the automatic tensioner and rotating it counter clockwise (unless you have a 3.0.)
Tension is set by the spring force in the tensioner. Sometimes the pulley itself needs replacement if it free spins; meaning its lost its grease and the bearings are wearing out fast or it's seizing and the belt is eating it up. Then sometimes the whole tensioner needs replacement if a new belt is installed and the tension produced on it by the tensioner exceeds the amount of belt deflection specified by your manual. Deflection is a measure of how taught the belt is. So that's what you use to tell if a belt is too loose, or before automatic tensioners, too tight.

you'd go clockwise according to my manual. Which is for 2000 through 2008.
Makes little difference since going the wrong direction at first won't cause any fires or anything.

You really should create a signature that at least states the year, engine, and edition of your truck if you plan on sticking around.

When I had a squeak up front, I replaced both the Idler Pulley and the Tensioner Pulley. They are both cheap (under $10 for both). That cleared my issues.
