Default Re: is it the indler pulley or the belt that causes the squeak?

I too am getting a loud squeaking coming from the belt, should I try some belt dressing first?

Like as a diagnostic measure? Belt dressing is more of a preventive measure, but it's probably what I'd do if I wanted a quick answer. Look at the belt for a super smooth shiny appearance (glazing) if that's the condition of your belt, assume it needs replacement. You can check the codition of your tensioner by checking belt tension as well. If your idler pulley itself (at the end of the tensioner) spins like a top when you spin it, then its bearings are probably causing a sound.

I went through at least 3 belts in the last two years. They don't squeal for a while be eventually it came back. I found a new mechanic who has dealt with this in the past. The problem he found was the after-market belts were every so slightly longer and every time it was damp or raining it would squeal.
Since buying a $39.00 belt directly from Ford (sin# match-up) the problem has gone away.

An automatic tensioner compensates for any slight increase in overall length.
I'm thinking that the stock belts with the softer rubber and the fiber backing hold up better in wet conditions than cheaper harder belt materials.

I recently bought a 99' 2WD ext cab ranger with the 3.0. I encountered the squeaky belt soon after buying it. Here is what I did to fix it:

1: replaced belt with a Duralast belt from autozone. (Still squeaking)

2: Spray the new belt with belt dressing. (Quit squeaking for a few minutes then the squeak became worse than before spraying belt dressing)

3: Removed the belt cleaned the belt with mineral spirits and then washed with soap and water. Cleaned pulleys with mineral spririts and a brush, then rinsed them with accetone. reinstalled Duralast belt. (still squeaking)

4: Replaced idler and tensioner pulleys. Reinstalled Duralast belt (They needed replaced anyway but still squeaking)

5: cleaned pulleys with a die grinder and a wire wheel. Reinstalled Duralast belt (still squeaking)

6: Replaced the Duralast belt with a Dayco belt from Autozone. (Have driven approximately 400miles no squeak so far)
