From my owners manual:
The advertised capacity is the amount of the indicated capacity and the
empty reserve combined. Indicated capacity is the difference in the
amount of fuel in a full tank and a tank when the fuel gauge indicates
empty. Empty reserve is the small amount of fuel remaining in the fuel
tank after the fuel gauge indicates empty.

The amount of usable fuel in the empty reserve varies and should
not be relied upon to increase driving range. When refueling your
vehicle after the fuel gauge indicates empty, you might not be
able to refuel the full amount of the advertised capacity of the
fuel tank due to the empty reserve still present in the tank.

My tank is listed at 17 gallons and the most gas I've pumped in during a fill up was 14.5 gallons. I still had 2.5 gallons of fuel left after the fuel gauge reads empty.

Also from my manual:
Avoid running out of fuel because this situation may have an adverse
effect on powertrain components.
If you have run out of fuel:
You may need to cycle the ignition from off to on several times after
refueling to allow the fuel system to pump the fuel from the tank to
the engine. On restarting, cranking time will take a few seconds longer
than normal.
Normally, adding 1 gallon (3.8L) of fuel is enough to restart the
engine. If the vehicle is out of fuel and on a steep grade, more than
1 gallon (3.8L) may be required.
The service engine soon indicator may come on.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'll finish a trip once my gas light turns on but 70 miles is a bit much. My wife never lets her gas light even come on and gets worried when she is riding with me and I'm getting low, lol.

I have nothing against you chad and I never have. My comments are in relation to what you said/typed not you yourself. Sorry if you took them too personally but there's nobody on the forums that I would personally be a dick to, including you. If I disagree with a comment I let you know about it. You've been here for a few days and half your posts are on revived threads about the same topics so you don't even know if/what I have contributed to these forums. Maybe try waiting until after a single post disagreeing with you to make a judgment on a person.

no prob! i can't help you with your problem, but if searching on here didn't answer you question, then it's fine to start a new thread (from what i understand).

I would think that your manual would show you the tank size (mine does), and then you can calculate you mpg (# miles driven since last fill-up / # gallons on next fill-up)...

That's right Arron. Size doesn't matter.. We all feel as if our tanks are 16, when in fact, they are 20. (super cabs)

Rangers are programmed to have the gauge light come on when you have 2 gallons left. and the light it on a separate sensor than the actual gauge. I remember my gauge was passed e but no light. I have a 17 gallon tank I could fit like 13 gallons in. so I still had 2 gallons easy left
