You can press down a little harder than you normally would on the gas peddle. I tried that a couple times to see if it would work and it does.

I am predicting the next comment will be along the lines of "Drop a V8 in it" or "3.slow" or "should have got a 4.0" lol Sorry man but you are not the first to ask this. There are few little thing you could do but in the end its really not worth it IMO. Just keep doin what mickblock said lol.

Just remember that there is something to be said for learning to be able to maintain, diagnose and repair your truck, or learn things about how it operates. So don't write it off as sub par just because it's not a Mustang.
Do you think it might be due for a basic tune-up?

check out the 3.0 threads you will get ideas there. Only thing i would invest in personally is a tuner but they are pricey for sure. To me tho its the only thing that will give me a noticeable difference, other than that I feel the rest is just throwing your money way.

and Welcome!

X2 on the routine maintenance. Knowing that your truck is performing the same a year or two later than when you bought will make you feel damn good!

Awesome. Thank you guys so much for the advice... bought the truck last week. It's an 04 with 45,000 miles on it. When is it a good time to think about a tune up?

That's not bad for miles, when I got my 2003 in June it only had 38,000. For now, I'd just change the oil and filter unless it has been done recently.
Yes, 3.0's are a little on the underpowered side, but they kind of make up for that by being the most reliable engine available in Rangers. Like a Timex watch, they can take a licking and keep on ticking! I have a 1997 Taurus with the same engine with 165,000 miles and it still runs awesome! There's lots with a quarter mil on the clock and still going strong!

Opening up the intake and exhaust works on a lot of things. However, from what I've gathered, On these, that is really limited to more noise. There are companies that make intakes and cams and rocker arms for um. But that stuff ain't for the faint of pocketbook....you hear what I'm sayin? I have a couple of things I'm about to do to mine and i will be postin it and the results...if there are any when I'm done.

underdogperformance.com can give you some ideas, other than just going there, underdrive pullies, roller rocker arms, keep it well maintained, open up intake and exhaust, after opened up, find a better throttle body(and tell me the part number), tuner chip, stroker kit, lose/remove all unnessicary weight, bypass the a/c with your serpentine belt, and finally, set up some nitrous(bad idea) or drop a different engine in it of course
