Default My heat goes out then the engine OVER heats

2002 ford ranger. it probably needs a new thermostat because for the past year it would always over heat and once I turn the heat on, it goes back down. It does that maybe once a week.
BUT NOW it is doing something different. It is getting colder and I noticed my heat will go out and then the truck over heats(so i cant get the heat out of the engine) It eventuallly goes back down. This morning it got high on me fast and right as I pulled over, it went down. One of my friends says he thinks I clogged my heater hose or something? I have no idea what it could be. As long as my truck does NOT over heat, I will have heat in the cab.

It's probably blowin coolant out. With a loos of coolant, there's not as much coolant in the system to transfer heat to the heater core so heating suffers. Find whatever the overheating problem is and you will solve the heating issue as well more than likely. I'm in Jones County. If you're not far away, drive it over, I'll give you a hand with it.

I don't suppose you've checked the coolant level lately? I sounds like your just low.

yeah it was very low. Reason I didnt think about filling it up because I put some water in there about a month ago. I forgot how big those antifreeze tanks really are and how much the truck actually uses. Plus I needed antifreeze for the winter anyways.

You need a 50/50 mix of antifreeze at ALL TIMES. It raises the boiling temperature as well as lowing the freezing temperature. You should never just run straight water.

Also, the tank should only be 1/2 full. It is for reserve and expansion.

I am glad you got it fixed....in the future you do not want to be overheating....you can easily blow a head gasket.........

Alright on the half full of antifreeze.

And yeah, not good on a blown head gasket. Before I would monitor it and with the heat on, it never over heated. It only got really hot once and I pulled right over at that second.
