Default Fan clutch-How to remove from water pump pulley?

Hey guys! I've got an '02 Edge 4x2. I need to remove the fan clutch and I don't know how to keep the water pump pulley from turning. I don't have the serpentine belt on...the engine is off the truck (I'm doing a swap). Went to the auto parts store and the tools they rent don't do the trick. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Put the belt back on and pull it tight. Works everytime. If you don't have that option, use an impact wrench.

I removed mine about 2 weeks ago. It's a '05 Edge with the 3.0. I did the same thing, rented the tools and didn't work! so I bought a strap, put it on and it slipped. So I figured it was dirty and it was! I cleaned the pulley real good & strap wrench and tried again. Mine is removed clockwise. yeah, go figure! I had my wrench to hold onto the engine fan; however, the wrench barely cleared the fan's blades so I couldn't get a good grip. I grabbed my rubber mallet, hit it several times really hard while holding tight onto strap wrench and it just like that it got loose. good luck.

Disregard my impact wrench comment. I was thinkin water pump pulley instead of fan clutch. Sorry. I had water pump on the brain. I just did a water pump on a 3.1 GM the other day. The belt trick will work though, but you need to pull it TIGHT.

Yeah they are a pain, try the strap wrench, that will bee your best bet, other than welding a peice of rod to the pulley, thats what I did! but I also wasn't reusing the clutch fan and I had another pulley.

One more tip. When you reassemble, make sure the threads are CLEAN and coat them with high temp SENSOR SAFE silicone. If you ever have to remove it again, it will not be as difficult. Don't worry about it working loose because of the silicone since the threads are not what holds the clutch in place once it's tight. As lonog as you tighten it properly, it'll be fine.

You can (Carefully) use a air hammer with a punch bit ,just don't hammer to deep and move to another edge if needed.
