well the only true reliability problem with these motors is a cam-synchro that likes to go out. Honestly you lose with the 3.0 becuase you get the power of a 4 cyl and the gas mileage of a 4.0. If only I knew that

well it will start chirping when it goes bad, and its located in the back of the motor behind and below the upper intake, i think its around 300 bucks for 1

I don't know about the cam-synchro, but I'm with DHEM on getting a 4.0, especially if you are wanting to get a 4x4.

300 bucks?! I got mine brand new for 40 bucks and got it installed in a shop for 100 bucks and I haven't had any issues yet.

3.0 are nice if you have a 2wd because then you can just let go of the pedal and bam instant MPG saving lol. I don't know how much I get MPG wise but I can fill my tank up to full and that will last me a good week until my next fill. And I drive 30 minutes to and from work total of one hour per day for 5 to 6 days (if I want to work Saturdays). But that's my .02. If you want 4x4 and you want to go offroading, then get a 4.0 IMO.

Don't take the 3.0 the wrong way. While the 4.0 is more bang for your buck the 3.0 is just as reliable and powers these trucks just fine. I have never felt like my ranger is under powered at all. The 4.0 guys say its a huge difference an it probably is but I still think the 3.0 is just fine. I don't have 4x4 but I have oversized tires and still feel plenty of pedal. I pull boats load the bed down and work this truck hard. Its a tough truck reagardless of engine.

The price of the truck and what they will give you for your jeep would determine if its a good trade or not.

I've read that the 4.0 sometimes have a problem with gaskets leaking coolant and mine might be, but I haven't had a ranger long enough to know if there are any other problems. My brother has had a Ranger for about 10 years now and I don't think he's ever had a problem with it.

I may be wrong but I think the HG problems are more of an issue with the FWD Vulcan, I've never heard of a RWD Vulcan having HG problems.
