Default knocking noise?

When I start my truck, it makes a knocking noise, but once it's running the noise goes away. Any ideas? I was driving it in June and it ran out of oil, haven't touched it since that night. Any suggestions as of what it may be? I can get a video of it in the morning so ya'll can hear it. I don't really have enough time to try and diagnose it right now, not to mention half of my tools got stolen a week ago so I can't tear anything apart and look for anything that isn't right. all help is appreciated

its called piston slap, not a good thing but not too bad of a bad thing, alot of GM cars have this.

Well if that's the case, does that mean there could be damage to my crankshaft, connecting rods, or the pistons? I'm not very good with engines yet, but if that's the case should I rebuild this motor, or get another one?

whats happening is the pistons are rocking back and fourth in the cylinders, it goes away because the piston expand as they get hot and fit as they should in the cylinders. Its bad, but not as bad as a rod knock, but either way it should be fixed.

So what should I do to fix it? does it require any machining on the block?

new piston rings i would say. you would have to pull the engine than if your doing that i would rebuild it from top to bottom and have a new engine. But before anything try some engine restore and see if that helps. Never know it could help it some.

I ran a few quarts or Marvel Mystery oil in it, and alot of the noise went away(that was in June when it first gave me problems) But I'll go pick up some engine restore and see what happens. I'm hoping it'll fix it cause if it does I'll have this thing on the road this wednesday(needs inspection and registration, I know it'll pass inspection if the motor is good). I'll keep you guys updated
