I dont think you need to have the platinum plugs in it. I run the bosch platinums, they are only like $2 i think.

They have the regular plat. then like the +2's, +4's, irridum

In my dads 4 popper the plugs on the laft bank were gapped at around
.80, but the were original. Gap them at .44 and you should be fine

DO NOT run bosch please. I had one blow out of my motor one time! go with motorcraft, but whatever your motor calls for in your owner's manual

The gap can probably be accounted by the fact that each time the spark plug fires, erosion occurs. Soundsl ike it may be time for new plugs, set them to factory gap. Stick with OEM parts if you want OEM performance.

What on earth does corporate downsizing have to do with spark plugs?

I think it means he's strapped for cash due to being layed off and doesn't want to spend so much money on spark plugs if possible.
