i am having a similiar problem...started out like that...but one day it started up than just died and wont start at all now. i can hear the "whizzing" noise of the pump when key is turned to ON. i suspect its the fuel filter... But how do i relive the pressure from the fuel lines when the truck wont start!!! i dont feel like being sprayed with gas when i replace the filter

Pull the gas cap off before you take the filter off

You might want to consider bringing it to a mechanic

Removing the gas cap only relieves pressure for the EVAP system not the actual fuel pressure

I did that on my truck and got no spray, but I could have had some luck on that one too

Hi, newb here.

I have a similar problem as the original poster. Takes several cranks to start. Suspected and check fuel pressure. When the key is turned (not started) the pressure spikes to operating pressure but instantly falls down to almost 0. Sounds like a check valve issue but I've read similar issues else where and it was the fuel pressure regulator. Naturally, I would really prefer to just replace the malfunctioning part. Any advice on telling which is the culprit?

Additionally, once started the truck runs fine but the pressure is about 65psi. Is that high? I thought norm was 30-50 but I've seen multiple pressure ranges listed on various forums.

It's a 2002 Ranger XLT 2.3L 5sp

Thanks!
