Default Time for a New Fuel pump?

Hello all, so after getting $5 of questionable gas (ghetto store) on a nearly empty tank, on Halloween night, I drove ~5 miles, got home around 5 am. Around noon I started it, stalled out, after a couple tries it will start, rev to about 2k, then die out and shakes, then rev to 2k, repeats until stalling. Drigas, more gas, fuel injector cleaner made it a tiny tiny tiny bit better, new fuel filter and now it'll idle almost normally after trying it like 7 times. If you hit the gas at all, no matter how slow or fast it dies out. I tested the spark plugs, all good (i did new plugs and wires over the summer), the fuel relay and fuse are working, the pump does prime then shuts off with the key to ON. Not the inertia switch either.
Hopefully getting a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow, but opening the Schrader valve did spray out gas. There is also vacuum pressure at the regulator by the Schrader valve. I'm assuming its the fuel pump dying, and I'll have to pull off the bed and check the wiring and connections.
Maybe the very low fuel level sucked rust or whatever into the old filter, then I blew the pump? Or did some idiot put sugar or something in my tank? I checked for residue in the cap, nothing. When it revs up it is running perfectly smooth.
Is there something else it could be? Oh, and the PCM relay is good too.
Thanks

thatll be tough to say...gotta get a pressure gauge like you said and see what type of fuel pressure your getting....i saw you said lift the bed...why not just drop the tank instead of going through the trouble of taking the bed off??

The Ranger has 75K on it, and put out no codes when I hooked it up.

----------

I've heard it's easier to slide the bed back or remove it rather than drop the tank.
Thanks

Don't know where you live. Is gas line antifreeze available there? Check on the label but many also remove water somehow out of gas...the most likely culprit when buying suspect gas. One small bottle of it is cheap. Sounds like you know what you are doing and maybe the fuel pump is acting up. If yours is mounted on the gas tank with sender unit as part of it be sure to go for a quality one. But who knows the gas line anti freeze may be a very cheap fix in comparison.

The truck and I are at college in Syracuse, NY. It was a couple degrees F above freezing the night it started. The first thing I did was add HEET dri-gas (isopropyl alcohol), which is a popular treatment for watery gas/antifreeze. I don't think its the gas anymore, because it does run fine when it revs itself. I suspected something like throttle position sensor as well, but that should give a code?

The symptoms you described could happen to be ignition related in terms of whatever does ignition advance. Pre-electronic..points operated by a cam..advance done below that with a mechanical advance unit altering the cams position. Electronic with still a distributor..maybe some motors still had that mechanical advance part? Such advance units usually had 2 springs which maybe could fail in time? Or the unit be gummed-up, stuck in time if never serviced. If no such unit then the advance is built into the module which controls the ignition. Usually when they go..they totally go and the motor won't fire at all. But running OK with the revs up some does make this a possibility.

The fuel pressure read 65, so I'm going to replace the throttle position sensor. It's two screws wouldn't break, going to try again tomorrow, probably filing it square and using a wrench.

Sounds like it'll start and run while you're giving it lots of gas but it'll die if you try to let it idle. I've had cars with those symptoms before and was always able to fix it by cleaning the throttle body with some throttle body cleaner. I saw a procedure for cleaning a Ranger throttle body in the How-To's forum somewhere. His is more thorough than the procedure I use (which he describes as half-assed) and probably safer, though I've never had any incidents.

try cleaning the throttle body as was mentioned above, also check/clean your idle air controll valve/motor and you mass airflow sensor
