Oil Pan Gasket Question

Hi Everyone I've attached a picture that I took while under my ranger checking for a leak. this is right behind the crank pulley. In my opinion this is the oil pan gasket that is coming out the front of the oil pan. I don't know if this is normal or not and need some advise. If the gasket is coming out I guess I'll have to drop the pan and replace the gasket, just wanted to get some expert opinions. Thanks in advance for any help.

I hope I can explain this good enough. This photo was taken laying under the truck, the bolts you can see in the picture are in the oil pan, and I believe that is the gasket behind the haromic balancer. I wish I had photo shop or something to right the part names on there but I don't. I hope this helps. Like I said earlier I will probably have to drop the oil pan and replace this gasket, I just wanted to get some expert opinions. Thanks!

is it leaking yet? I'd say leave it unless it's leaking, in which case, yeah, it looks like the gasket is pushing out.

Does look like the pan is working it's way out. It seems to be a common problem with the 2000ish 3.0Ls.

Sometimes it's easier to jank the engine and change the gasket on a stand than going through the hassle of doing that upside down. Not unheard of, but usually people that go this route wished they'd just pulled the engine to begin with.

I am taking it circled in red is the gasket u talk of. I am with John if it isn't leaking leave it

I dont know about pulling the whole engine to change a gasket.

you are correct, the part you circled in red is the gasket. I also am not sure about pulling the engine. One thing I was thinkning is I might loosen the pan bolts and try to re-seat the gasket.

The gasket is the problem, there is a revised gasket that won't suffer this same fate. You could try puting it back into place, but it's likely that the pan gasket will just work itself out all over again.

well they have this stuff that if you know its leaking u can add this dye to ur oil and power wash the bottom of your car and use a blacklight and glasses and see exactly where this thing is leaking from and then from there either replace or tighten

I am a submarine mechanic, and from my years of experience: dont ever try to reseat the gasket. If it isnt leaking yet leave it alone. If you try to reseat it after it has been seated once, you are GOING TO create leaks.

it should stick out a little, but not that much, almost the whole end of the gasket has came out... if you plan on dropping the pan for replacement, understand that you have to get the gasket under and around the oil sump.. you will not have much room to work even after you loosen engine mounts and jack up the engine.. it is possible but will not be a cake job to get it under and around the oil sump

Why not just use RTV Sealant? It has worked numerous times on various vehicles for me. I prefer the high temp grey or orange kind. You can use elctrical cleaner to clean the engine service and apply the RTV sealant to the engine side. Then you slap the oil pan back on and tighten. Simple!

Hi, this thread is about 3 yrs old, but found it useful. I had oil leak from front pan gasket sticking out like what was shown in previous pic. 2000 xlt 4x4 off road. Was able to loosen as many bolts as I could reach without removing starter, then wedged 2 screwdrivers under each side of first bolts on each side of budge, to provide a little clearance for push gasket back in. Used black high oil resistant silicone RTV on both sides of gasket then slipped in, only about 1/8 inch shows now, let RTV dry for about an hour then tightened pan bolts. No Leak! will test drive and write a follow up if leak reappears. Thanks!
