I don't think so, you'll have to remove the sync to do that. And honestly, I don't think it's necessarily that easy, because I have rarely seen anybody widely suggest doing that as preventive maintenance on a 3.0.

Yes, solved my problem. The sychronizer is supposed to be a sealed unit. If you are having any problems with it... replace it. Since that's what drives your oil pump, failure isn't worth it. As far as preventative maintenance, why not oil under sensor (top of sychronizer)? I guess as long as you don't get oil all over the vane it would be ok, but I'm not sure it would help as it is sealed.

Thanks Mac:

The chirping belt has raised it voice again. I'm going to have to get that gator-belt. It isn't doing it all the time or as bad as before I changed out the tensioner.

Kinda hidden. Looking from the front of the truck, follow the left valve cover to the back of the engine and the sensor on top of the sychronizer is just to the right sticking out of the back of the block. Disconnect the plug and take out the 2 bolts holding it on... and there you go. Here's a sketch for you:

My oil fill is on the other side, but the location of the sensor is the same. Hope this helps...

I'm new here. But this is exactly what my Ranger is doing. I ran a compression test and found #5 low when warm, so I pulled the heads. Found ex valves sucked in 4 cylinders and a crack in #5. Thank you shitty California gas! Still bucking but I needed the valve job anyway. Replaced CPS, checked all fluids levels, replaced TPS, replaced coil pack, wires, plugs, injectors..... still doing it. At my wits end. Any Ideas?

did you change the sychronizer when you replaced the cps?

also, when i was trying to find the problem initially, i found a new fuel filter helped the roughness.

Check for vacuum leaks, I've heard they will cause similar symptoms.

Changed the fuel filter and no difference. Checked fuel pump pressure and it was good. Took it to a friends Dyno and ran it. At 4k the vacuum pressure dropped to almost nothing. Pulling catalytics off tomorrow. It all I have left. CA unit has 5 of 'em! Wonder if I can eliminate at least 4 and have no computer issues! Because they aint cheap!

New to the forum, not very proficient technically and apologize for resurrecting a dead horse --- my 2003 3.0 Ranger just started exhibiting this phenomenon --- is there a way to determine if the cps is functionally adequate without just replacing it? Also, is the Motorcraft part the only viable replacement or would aftermarket suffice? Thank you.

Took mine to Ford and they hooked it up to the computer... so if you could look up or ask what the correct range of output you might be able to test it with a DMM. Sometimes you can just try to rock the flag on top of the assembly, if any play... it needs replaced. The sychronizer also drives the oil pump, if it malfunctions it can destroy the gears that drive it. That's why many people decide to go with the OEM replacement... not worth the risk
