Default Mystery pulley

Could someone please tell me the name of this pulley and what it does?

When I idle, it makes a loud click every half-minute like clockwork. I just bought this truck used (a 2001 Ranger edge), and I'm about to take it into a mechanic.

Thanks,
Seth

its your a/c pulley. when your a/c engages you can see the clutch engage. its probably your bearing that needs replacement.

A/C pump. It also runs with your heater on.

if it cycles fast it just might be low on freon, so if it is there would be a small leak because freon does not just disappear or go bad

Thanks for the responses.

The center part of the pulley cycles, then stops, then begins cycling again, while the belt continues to move.

Is this normal function?

if it cycles fast off/on etc... then that indicates low freon.
is the a/c good and cold on a hot day?

yep, thats your AC compressor and clutch. it engages and disengages to pressurize your climate control system. if its clicking on every 30 seconds or so thats sounds pretty normal. i wouldnt worry about it unless your AC doesnt get cold.

Yep. That's what mine was doing. Can you hear the click when it starts spinning again from inside the cab? That's what got me nervous. The click is so loud. I just got the Ranger used, and I hadn't heard that noise in other vehicles.

Yup I could hear it inside the cab. Filled my coolant tank up to the fill line and it doesn't do it anymore. It still wont spin when the air conditioner is off but apparently that is normal.

Perfectly normal. It free-wheels when the compressor is not needed, either because it is off or at pressure. When needed, it kicks on.

Uhh, you what??? There is no coolant tank for the air conditioning. If you mean the coolant tank over on the right side by the washer fluid, that is for the radiator, not the air conditioning.
