Default How do you remove the steering shaft?

Hi, I joined awhile back but this is my first post, if I remember. Maybe not anyway today I was stupid enough to attempt an oil & filter change & I learned the hard way that it's not possible without removing the steering shaft. I got the old oil filter off somehow but I can't get the new one on & the bolt on the steering shaft will not budge. Seems to be welded on. Anyway, I'm now stranded without a way to work tomorrow. What's the secret to putting an oil filter on? BTW- I've been changing my oil & filters since 1973 but never found it impossible until today. Had Walmart do it the last 3 times cause it looked like a pain the first time I tried a year ago. Should have stuck with my instincts.

Some info on just what the heck you're working on sure would help you...

BTW...never heard of anything automotive where you have to un-do a steering shaft to change the oil...

I finally got the filter on. Never going to do that again. Probably didn't help that I have big hands & a sore right shoulder.

What's the year, 2wd or 4wd, engine, and transmission of your truck. I'm very intrigued..

don't worry, I felt the same way you did with the darn ranger, my SPECIALTIES ARE EUROPEAN CARS, anyways at least with the 3.0 you have to disconnect the ground from the starter and yes you can undue the bolt to the steering shaft, I did them both ways and with my big hands it does not help either. glad you got it done
