The weight makes a huge difference in the winter.

The sticker on my 2000 3.0 says 5w30, they might have changed it to 5w20 in the 3.0 in a later year.

Ford did change the recommended oil weight in later years because my 02' Ranger 3.0 V6 was listed as taking 5W 20. I also had an 04 Ranger 4.0L V6 4*4 that, I believe, also took 5W20.

I believe the 5w20 is lighter, and newer vehicles run more environmentally friendly on lighter weight oil. However, putting in a slightly heavier oil, such as 5W30 won't necessarily harm your engine -- mostly gas mileage and minimal (at that) is affected.

Really ? Piston slap ? What is that, what does it have to do with warm weather, and how does a heavier oil fix it ?

I had a beater '81 Pontiac Wagon that had a bad piston slap. Since I was going to swap out another engine, I filled it with 60w racing oil to get by for a short period.
Quieted it down some.

Re: What type/weight of oil do you use?
I have been using Penzoil 10w-30 because I just feel the factory recommended 5w-20 is too thin , it might be OK for winter use for all around use especially in the summer I prefer the heavier weight 10w-30. Next oil change I'm going to go synthetic.
