Help Needed with Rough idle/CEL/cylinder misfire
First time poster....could really use any insight on what i got going on with my '99 Ranger Xlt(V6 3.0 FF 110,000miles):
basically, i wasn't paying attention and ran the truck really really low on gas one night....made it into the nearest mom and pop station and put in about 3/4 of a tank. The next afternoon, i started to notice problems.
First, the truck was idling a little rougher than usual and was lacking power, and then later the CEL(check engine light) came on. Had the codes scanned at autozone and came up with a cylinder 5 misfire. Bought new plugs and wires there and put them in...problem didn't improve and the idle was actually worse. had the codes scanned again and this time cylinders 3-6 were shown to be misfiring. i noticed the wires were originally ordered 1,2,3 front to back on the passengers side and 5,6,4 on the drivers side..this is the order i put the new ones in....first time doing plugs/wires.
I don't have much mechanical know how but i'm a quick study so i've been reading up on things and have some limited theories and plenty of questions. btw,the truck has always been well cared for and has no history of any real problems.
-could this be a bad gas/ dirty fuel filter/ fuel pump issue because of the combination of running the car extremely low--something i do more than i should--and getting gas at a suspect station? should i start with some water remover?
-checked and cleaned the IAC valve but not the MAF sensor...don't have the right tool.
-i bought duralast wires and bosch platinum plugs---is this part of the problem?
any input on where to start or what to try next would be much appreciated! trying to do as much as i can myself and keep costs low.
