some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
problem #1
when i check the oil after i run it, the dipstick shows a normal amount of oil. if i wipe it, and put it back in, and dont run it, pull it back out, it shows nothing.
problem #2
the coolant resevoir was empty when i checked it, no fluid at all.
might be a problem, might not be. a friend told me whens the engines hot, the coolant gets sucked into the radiator. true or not true?
problem #3
theres a clicking noise, sometimes. doesnt matter if its cold or hot. sounds like the tappet. its a clicky sound that goes faster if the rpms are higher.

1. Check when warm and level ground. Let it sit for a few minutes after warming to let oil drain back to pan.
2. Check coolant when cold.
3. Not sure abouit that one.

Well for problem #1 I don't have much to say. Assuming you put enough quarts in it, which I'm sure you do. #2 Have you checked your radiator over well to make sure the isn't any cracks in it? #3 You stated you have a clicking noise. I assume you mean from underneath your hood. I'm no truck mechanic by any means. The only thing that has ever really clicked under my hood was my air compressor. Sorry, I don't know much just trying to throw something out there.

FYI: Yellow is no good in the "light" layout.

Re: some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
the clicking seems to be coming from the belt area, like right around the alternator.

yea, i put another quart in when i frst saw the problem. so when i check it the first time, it shows plenty of oil. im thinking that the first reading is accurate.

Re: some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
I do not remember how my alternator was acting before I had it rebuilt in my 98 Ranger.
And 05Ranger mine is always on dark so I don't pay it any attention, but maybe this works.
2004xlmiller sorry I'm not more help. If I can remember anything I'll let you know. These other guys seem extremely smart so hopefully they will see this post soon and give you so advise. I guess if all else fails there should be a mechanic close by

Re: some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
What kind of oil filter is on your truck? If it is a Fram, buy another good brand and chunk the Fram. I have first hand info of Frams, which don't let the oil flow thru freely, causing tappets to be starved and click. If not a Fram then disregard this post.

Re: some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
ok, i changed the oil today. guess how much came out... 1 QUART!!!! i was on the brink guys. so i put in the 4.5 quarts needed, and the new filter (not a fram) and the noise went away. runs like a champ now!

Congrads! Hope that completely solved your problem. And to Texas001 that's a nice bit of info you had there. I'll keep that in mind if mine starts doing the same.

Re: some little problems with my 3.0, HELP!!
Hey 2004xlmiller. You were extremely lucky. With one quart of oil and out on the highway, that could have been real trouble. But as has been said "let the Quart be with you". Now that you know, I would keep a real good check on your oil.
