Default can i use any 3.0... non-flex, taurus, sable?

I have a '99 3.0 flex fuel 4x4 ranger... it needs the engine swapped out... can i use any 3.0 engine, for instance, from a Taurus or Sable? I really would appreciate your knowledge!!!!

I would say no. there's a lot more difference between a fwd 3.0 and a rwd 3.0 than the most notable one of it being rotated 90 degrees, lol. Also, the intake was rotated 180 degrees and I think that the cylinder heads
swapped sides. Ok, I just found out that fwd Vulcans use different head gaskets due to the fact that they have a reverse flow cooling system. So it is not recommended.

Im doing this same swap. As far as gaskets from wat ive read u would just need ranger head gasket, swapout oil pickup/pump ( ive also been told you might not have to swap out the pump). Accesories. Manifolds. Fuel rail/ injectors. Heads and block are same.i havent actually done this swap yet just read a lot about it let me know how it goes

Taken from AllanD at TRS:

"If you get an engine from a Taurus/sable/windstar AND you get one that
has a coil pack, all you need to do to make the engine run with your
flex-fuel system is use your intake, fuel rail (w/injectors) and sensors
on the "new" engine

The FWD engines do use different exhaust manifolds, accessories, etc

AND most importantly as someone mentioned the FWD engines used differnet head gaskets because of a differejnt coolant flow path through the engine

It isn't really "reversed" so much as it is "different" because in either case the coolant is sucked from the radiator by the water pump and forced into the block then up into the heads, but that's where things get different.

The volume of flow from the block to the heads is regulated differently,
because on the FWD engine the coolant escapes from the engine
(through the thermostat and back to the radiator) at the Flywheel end of the engine
On the ranger the thermostat is at the "front" (water pump) end of the engine.

In reality the head gaskets are more or less the same, but they are essentially installed "upsidedown and backwards" on one engine Vs the other.

In either case the RWD head gaskets (Aerostar/Ranger) are marked
"TRUCK" or "TRK" in 10mm tall letters in addition to the more usual
"TOP" and "LEFT" or "RIGHT" markings.

One other thing to be aware of is that if you get an Aerostar
engine the Exhaust manifolds and accessory brackets are
different from a Ranger.

Provided they aren't run without oil (or coolant) a 3.0 engine in
a Taurus typically runs for several hundred thousand miles."

I read a little more in that same post and I believe you have to swap the oil pan as well.

So as far as a taurus goes you can basically swap your shit straight to that motor an be on the road?

Thats what I got from it. If you have a flex fuel, you need to make sure to use your fuel rail and injectors. Basically you use the taurus block and heads, with Ranger head gaskets. Use your Ranger oil pan, and all of the accessories, ex. water pump, alternator, brackets...

Its a good way to go I think. It seems like there are more Taurus's in the junkyard than Rangers.

You'll use the Ranger water pump, but it should bolt right up. I've never done it so I don't know exactly what all is different, but I do know that the block and heads are the same so anything on your motor should swap over to the taurus one.
