I only get a rough idle when the car idles for a long time. If i sit at idle for a long time check engine light will blink and eventually stay on. When i pull the code it says misgure on #6. Clear the code and car drives well just if i idle for a longer perior of time. Any suggestions? I changed the plugs about a month ago. Its a 2003 ford ranger 3.0 with abt 250k on the odo

Blinking check engine light is really bad. I wouldn't drive it until the problem is fixed. Did you change the coil pack?

Blinking CEL indicates a misfire of some kind.

I'm not certain it's for low fuel. I had about half a tank, now it's a full tank, it still comes on. However my oil temp gauge was fluctuating after exiting the highway today. It stopped after a while.

There is a tech bulletin on 2004-2006 Ford Ranger V-6 engines (TSB-05-26-3). They have an issue with the exhaust valve seats recessing back into the heads. Apparently it is a manufacturer defect that is only covered if it is caught during the warranty period. You may want to do a compression check on your cylinders. If any cylinders are low, perform a leak down test. MAF, IAC, plugs and wires should be checked first as they are cheaper to fix. If it is the exhaust valves, you will have to pull the heads and take them to a machine shop and have them fixed.

----------

Check plugs & wires, MAF, IAC 1st. Then do a compression check on Cylinder 6. If the compression check indicates low compression, do a leak down check on the cylinder.

The "check gauges" light is most certainly for low fuel. It's telling you to check your fuel gauge and verify it's low, then fill up. It's weird and it's the only vehicle I've been in that does not have an actual gas light. But it is, most assuredly, for low fuel.

If it still comes on, that simply means one of the gauges is operating out of normal range. This could be the oil pressure gauge, the voltage gauge, the coolant temp gauge, or the fuel level is too low (or sending unit reporting out of range). So in a generic sense, if nothing is wrong with your truck, you'll see that light illuminate with low fuel. If something else is going on, such as overheating, low oil pressure, or low charging voltage, the light will come on as well reminding you to check your readings.

I know it comes on during low fuel but I have a full tank. No other gauges seem out of the ordinary. Hmm, thanks though!

How many miles? Has the cam syncro been changed?

If you don't know the history of the syncro or if it has more then 75k on it then order a new MC syncro right now and swap it out.

Could be oil pressure. See if when you see the check gauges light, you also see the oil pressure light illuminate.

As Geek said, when the cam sync starts to go, the oil pressure can drop. As long as it's reading over 7 PSI, the dummy gauge in the cluster will read smack dab in the middle of the gauge, leading you to think nothing is wrong.
