The 3.0 is not a smooth idling engine.

sounds as if you have the same problem I had but mine was a 2005. There is a tech bulletin from Ford on it (2004-2006, TSB 05-26-3). There is a manufacturing defect in the exhaust valve seats. I had to pull the heads & have new exhaust valve seats installed at a machine shop. I replaced the plugs, wires, coil pack, fuel filter, IAC valve, cleaned the MAF before I ran a compression check on cylinders 4, 5, 6 and got 200, 40, 20 in the cylinders. I built a leak down tester and confirmed the leak on cylinder 6. I pulled both heads and found all the exhaust valve seats were bad.

gardening101..........

Hah! That sounds familiar! Just got through putting mine back together last week because of head work and started it up and keeerrraaaappp! A head gasket leak! Took the drivers side head back off due to leaking coolant into #6 cylinder and everything looked good so the only thing I can figure is I didn`t torque properly the first time. Oh well. Putting the radiator back in tomorrow to see how it runs. I was very careful this time to torque properly and make sure everything was super clean. If I get another head gasket leak I`m going for the Blue Devil or Steel Seal.

It was previously throwing 305 and 316 codes every once in a while and sometimes at stop lights it would start missing big time. Exhaust valve seats worn out. Only 116,000 miles too. Hopefully with this repair, I`m through wrenching for a few years on this one.

Gentlemen,

Your rough idle as far as I am concerned is the nature of the beast. I had the same problem as most of you have had. I replaces the spark plugs, wires, coil and cleaned just about every value and all rest of the other garbage and still had the miss.

After talking to several mechanic's and also posting on the forum for about 3 week and received many suggestions on this miss. I finally decided to live with it.

I did have a bad #6 fuel injector. I changed it and the engine was better but still felt like a miss but not as bad as before. I still have a slit miss when I first start up in the morning but once the engine warms up it run much, much better. The RPM no longer fluxes like it did before at idle.

So, as far as the miss I have just decided to live with it. I am still getting around 14 to 16 MPG local driving.

I just bought a 2000 with 138k miles. When I bought it there was no rough idle.. though the next day there was. I've cleaned the MAF sensor the throttle body and the IAC or aic or whatever that thing is (sorry I'm really tired). Tomorrow I'm going to replace the ignition coil and change out the fuel filter. It seems to be a pretty common problem and I don't really experience any performance issues (at least that I've noticed it's hard to say owning the truck all of 2 days)

I was just really pissed because it didn't have this issue when i bought it then the next day I get it. It seems to be worse when I use the AC too.

But if you've all had this problem and everything seems to work fine still after I do those two things I might just stop until either I get an error code or the truck stops working.

Check for vacuum leaks, especially around the elbow of the pcv valve. Move your fingers along the tubing while the truck is running, if you have one you will feel it.

Mine sometimes runs a bit rough on start-up but it smooths right out once I pull it into gear and start moving. I just bought so I will clean the MAF and IAC and am planning on plugs/wires soon. Also going to change out the stock air box for a K&N filter that I have laying around.

Later,

Lee

Don't bother with that K&N. Waste of money, no power, less filtration, and you'll be cleaning your MAF again from the oil.

So I went to replace the coil pack and I noticed that the boot on one of the plugs looked like it was out too far. So I pushed it in and started it up and it ran fine.

I felt like such an idiot. But I'm glad that's all it was.

Thanks for all the help guys and sorry that I wasted your time.

I have the same problem and an good mechanic told me if you have the 2 piece intake it is the O-rings and it is best to replace them all. Remove the intake and install new ones, they are available at parts stores for 8 bucks. Install all new one for the intake, IAC and throttle body. The small leaks cause disturbed air resulting it a ruff idle, once you give it some gas the air speed increases and the engine runs fine.

Yes, Mine started acting up at about 100,000 miles, but I waited until 135,000 to fix it. It just kept getting worse & worse. I got lucky. A few people I talked to waited to do their heads & ended up dropping a valve in the cylinder. I hope to be done working on it for awhile....
