Sounds like your IAC (Idle Air Control Valve). I have had 4 Rangers and all of them have had to have a new one. On the first one someone told me to take it off and clean it out. Well thats only a short term fix. I think that lasted me like a week or two. Go ahead and buy one, their about 50 bucks and take 5 minutes to put it on. It will run new again. I've attached the instructions with torque specs.

i have a 94 with the 3.0 5 speed, recently the tensioner pulley went so we threw on a new one and new belt, ran fine after that. then we got hit with a huge rainstorm for the past 2 days and during that, ive been having low idle and it sounds like a misfire i believe... im 20 and not a mechanic so to me it sounds like popcorn starting.. a few pops here and there and it doesnt have the pep it did last week. no belt squealing or anything like that, so i doubt it had anything to do with it.=, but im not sure... should i try new plugs/wires first?

I have a little bit of a rough idle in mine, really minor. I think any shivers from mine is the sparkys, or the wires, maybe air filter too. I've really been bad with the upkeep, going to change that soon once I can afford to replace the camsyncro

I had a rough idle and then my truck took a shit. It wouldnt stay running without me keeping my foot on the gas. Before it was that bad it just wouldn't hold idle for shit. I found out it was an idle control valve that needed replaced. Just a small plastic box with 2 screws that pluged into something. It was about 80 bucks and 3 minutes worth of work.

I talked to a ford tech and he said they are no for hairline cracks in the cylinder heads causing this. 900$ job

Before you dump $900 into it i would do a compression check first just to make sure. Heads are a common problem in the 3.0's. mine shot shit a couple months back. The exhaust valves sucked into the head and there were cracks in it.

I purchased my 2002 Ranger with 3.0 new. I didn't like the idle from the beginning. Not really rough, but definitely not smooth either. The dealer did (or claims he did) whole bunch of stuff- motor mount isolation tests and I can't remember anything else after all this time. Never fixed it. I had contacts inside Ford who checked out my complaint with the dyno people. Their response was, the cam timing was changed for emission purposes and they "all run that way". I got used to it and the truck was trouble free from 2001 when I bought it until about a month ago when I experienced 3 "crank-no start" episodes with no codes and good fuel pressure. (this is a continuing mystery). My opinion on the rough idle is: if it is a minor annoyance, its probably nothing. You can spend a pile of time and money and not see an improvement. If you are getting a code, fix the problem.

rough idle in mine changed plugs wires and coil pack much better but still rough at idle: cleaned MAF sensor helped but still rough and it feels like it has a ping or knock when climbing a hill... no power? Next step is going to be IAC valve and O2 sensors I guess. I did notice the hose running to the pcv valve is kinked when under vacuum pressure and the rubber grommet it sits in is loose needs replacing

Anyone getting a P0171 -(Bank 1 system adaptive fuel too lean) that is the only code mine is throwing

Mine isn't too bad. Had a definite miss when I first bought it last summer, but after a good tune up and driving more it cleared up for the most part. Every now and then though....
I think these Ford 3.0 engines are kind of rough just by nature. Certainly not silky smooth like a GM 3.8 V6 which were the only V6 engines I had owned up to this point.

Vulcans weren't as smooth as the Duratec 3.0 but were still MUCH smoother than the 2.9 was.

I have the same problem.. Only shakes really bad in drive gears.. In nutral or park its fine... I did a full tune up and MAF , IAC and throttle body cleaning.. No CEL.. Since it only does it in drive gears do you think it can be a tranny mount?.. Or maybe engine mount?..
Thanks

I too am curious about this...2002 3.0 here.

Have a bit of a rough idle upon start, and once it's been running for a minute or two, it tends to smooth out. Figured new plugs/wires/air filter would be in order.

Changed all that this weekend to no avail. Still has a bit of a hiccup occasionally on start. Will check IAC next time the free time permits.
